Further Professional Development

Greater Anglia are committed to providing our colleagues with the appropriate training and development. We believe nurturing talent is the secret to running a successful, thriving railway.

On day one our newbies join ‘Welcome on Board’ our award-winning onboarding 3-day programme. It gives all newbies an opportunity to learn more about the business and it’s goals, how best they can apply our values and behaviours to their role, the importance of safety and accessibility, as well as how they can influence the service we deliver to our customers.

Diversity and Inclusion Training

We’re committed to making everyone feel welcome because we believe we are Greater Together. Greater Together is our internal brand linked to everything we do that drives Diversity and Inclusion including our culture awareness programme. The programme supports colleagues to foster an environment which is inclusive where people feel safe to be their authentic selves at work.

Customer Experience Training

The Customer Experience is key to us delivering successful journeys to our customers getting them from A to B efficiently. Getting the training right for this area of the business is crucial. We train and develop customer facing managers and supervisors to better understand their influence on the customer experience.

Embracing Diversity and Fostering Inclusion at Greater Anglia, we are dedicated to cultivating a workplace that values, respects, and includes every individual. We recognize that diversity goes far beyond box-ticking; it entails creating a culture that welcomes and celebrates the unique perspectives and talents each person brings. Hence, we established Affinity, our Sex and Sexuality Group, with a clear mission: to enhance our reputation, attract a diverse pool of talented individuals, and uphold inclusivity throughout our organisation.

Affinity is not merely a group that celebrates diversity on specific awareness days - it is a year-round commitment to nurturing a culture of acceptance and celebration. We understand that true inclusivity necessitates acknowledging and appreciating the contributions of all individuals, regardless of their sex or sexuality. Within Affinity, we provide a safe space for open conversations, where we can learn from one another and address behaviours that may be hurtful or offensive.

George Carey - Chair of Affinity

I am proud to support an honest and genuine workplace where we all feel comfortable being our true selves. Here at Greater Anglia, we have a strong commitment to diversity and equality, and being able to contribute to that is truly fulfilling. It demonstrates support not only for myself but also for others within the LGBTQIA+ community.”

Jason (Artie) Winstanley - Co-Chair of Affinity

"My name is Artemis, or Arty for short, and serving as the Co-Chair of Affinity fills me with immense pride, given our focus on fostering an inclusive and supportive community within Greater Anglia. Being a part of this group has allowed me to meet new individuals who share a common interest in workplace diversity and inclusion, and I am thrilled to work alongside them!

Embracing Diversity: Celebrating Ethnicity & Culture at Greater Anglia
Our aim is simple: to create an inclusive environment where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued. We understand the importance of representation, both within our company and in the eyes of the public. By fostering a culture of acceptance and understanding, we showcase Greater Anglia as a truly inclusive company, welcoming people from all backgrounds.

As a networking group, we are here to support our colleagues, ensuring that they are treated equally and with respect. If any issues arise in the workplace, we are here to assist, offering guidance and pointing individuals in the right direction for reporting such matters. Our goal is to create an environment where everyone can thrive, regardless of their differences.

Sophie Thrower (she/her) - Chair of Ethnicity & Culture

Being part of the networking groups here at Greater Anglia has been a push in the right direction of how we as people should be behaving in an ideal world in the year 2023. Having different people from different walks of life, heritage, cultures, religion, sexuality, and sex all coming together in a big melting pot. Understanding that we all are unique in our own ways and that is ok. The networking groups are here to celebrate us all and who we are and what we believe and allowing us all to be ourselves in the workplace as well as out in the big wide world. The network groups are here to educate, support and guide our colleagues into a more inclusive and respectful environment and workplace.”

Christopher Lewis - Vice Chair of Ethnicity & Culture

“I am Christopher Lewis, an experienced Revenue Protection Officer based in Colchester, with over 20 years of service. Recently approached to become vice chair of the Ethnicity and Culture group, this opportunity holds personal significance. In secondary school, as one of few black students, I faced bullying and racially derogatory behaviour that affected my academic performance and self-confidence. However, my first full-time job at 23 changed everything, allowing me to express myself and develop confidence. I am passionate about inspiring others to learn from challenges and pursue their dreams.”
