Historic England

We’re passionate about what we do. Every day we create solutions, and deliver services and outcomes that make a real difference to England’s historic environment.

Equality and Diversity

We are an equal opportunities employer and actively promote the benefits of a diverse workforce. Here you can find out more about our policy on equality and diversity.

Valuing diversity

We aim to increase the number and diversity of people who actively engage with, and support, the historic environment and continually look for new ways to promote the past in a way that is inclusive to all and that celebrates the cultural diversity of England’s heritage.

These values run through everything that we do. We value diversity amongst our staff and expect everyone to be treated with equal dignity and respect. We also understand that you have a life beyond work: we have family-friendly policies and promote flexible working to ensure that you can balance your work and home life.

We are working hard to improve diversity in our workforce and have a diversity action plan that highlights our main priorities. If you have any questions or suggestions please email the HR team.

Disability Confident Committed

We are committed to the “Disability Confident” standards and are proud to use the Disability Confident badge to demonstrate our commitment to ensuring that disabled people and those with long term health conditions have the opportunities to fulfill their potential and realise their aspirations with us.

In terms of recruitment, this means that we will interview all disabled applicants who meet the minimum criteria for a job vacancy and consider them on their abilities. We are also happy to discuss reasonable adjustments to make sure that people are not disadvantaged when applying for and doing their jobs.

We are determined to make sure that:

  • Our workforce reflects the diverse society that it serves
  • No job applicant or employee receives less favourable treatment by reason of age, disability, gender re-assignment, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation, marriage and civil partnership, or pregnancy and maternity
  • No job applicant or employee is disadvantaged by conditions or requirements, which cannot be justified by the requirements of the job.

We are an equal opportunities employer.

Employee Benefits

We recognise that your salary is only a part of your employment package.

We’ve developed a broad range of benefits that you could be entitled to when you join us. These include direct and indirect financial benefits, a range of leave options and tailored development opportunities. Other benefits include discounts with a number of retailers and products, as well as free entry into all English Heritage sites. We regularly review the benefits we offer, so those listed here are subject to change.

Financial

Pension schemes

Your pension is a very valuable part of your package. At Historic England you’ll have access to a competitive pension.

Life assurance

Pension scheme membership includes a Death in Service benefit. The payment is based on either two or three times your pensionable pay, depending on the pension scheme you participate in.

Childcare vouchers

We are keen to help employees who are working parents. We offer a childcare voucher scheme so parents can buy childcare out of their gross salary. If you use the scheme you’ll save on your tax and national insurance contributions.

Commuting loan

We help towards the cost of travel to work in the form of interest free loans to our employees. Commuting loans are available for trains and coach season tickets, car parking or for buying a bicycle.

Payroll Giving

We make it easy for all employees to make regular donations to charities. Our tax efficient and convenient Payroll Giving service deducts through your monthly pay so you make a net saving.

Annual holiday purchase scheme

You can request to buy up to ten days additional annual leave each year (on a pro rata basis where applicable). If approved, the cost of buying the additional leave is then deducted from your pay.

We offer a generous maternity/adoption package. You could take up to 28 weeks leave at full pay and 11 weeks on statutory maternity/adoption pay (subject to your length of service and National Insurance contributions).

Enhanced paternity pay

If you’re a new parent, you can take up to 10 days’ paid paternity leave if your partner has recently given birth or adopted a child (subject to length of service).

If you have a child under 18 or a child who is disabled, unpaid parental leave of up to four weeks is available each year. This is subject to length of service and any previous parental leave taken with other employers.

Special leave

We will provide you with special leave arrangements if you are faced with a personal crisis or an emergency involving a dependant. We can also grant special leave for activities such as public duties or service with the Reserve Forces.
