Historic England

We’re passionate about what we do. Every day we create solutions, and deliver services and outcomes that make a real difference to England’s historic environment.

Equality and Diversity

We are an equal opportunities employer and actively promote the benefits of a diverse workforce. Here you can find out more about our policy on equality and diversity.

Valuing diversity

We aim to increase the number and diversity of people who actively engage with, and support, the historic environment and continually look for new ways to promote the past in a way that is inclusive to all and that celebrates the cultural diversity of England's heritage.

These values run through everything that we do. We value diversity amongst our staff and expect everyone to be treated with equal dignity and respect. We also understand that you have a life beyond work: we have family-friendly policies and promote flexible working to ensure that you can balance your work and home life.

We are working hard to improve diversity in our workforce and have a diversity action plan that highlights our main priorities. If you have any questions or suggestions please email the HR team.

Disability Confident Committed

We are committed to the "Disability Confident" standards and are proud to use the Disability Confident badge to demonstrate our commitment to ensuring that disabled people and those with long term health conditions have the opportunities to fulfil their potential and realise their aspirations with us.

In terms of recruitment, this means that we will interview all disabled applicants who meet the minimum criteria for a job vacancy and consider them on their abilities. We are also happy to discuss reasonable adjustments to make sure that people are not disadvantaged when applying for and doing their jobs.

We are determined to make sure that:

  • Our workforce reflects the diverse society that it serves
  • No job applicant or employee receives less favourable treatment by reason of age, disability, gender re-assignment, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation, marriage and civil partnership, or pregnancy and maternity
  • No job applicant or employee is disadvantaged by conditions or requirements, which cannot be justified by the requirements of the job.

Childcare vouchers

We are keen to help employees who are working parents. We offer a childcare voucher scheme so parents can buy childcare out of their gross salary. If you use the scheme you'll save on your tax and national insurance contributions.

Commuting loan

We help towards the cost of travel to work in the form of interest free loans to our employees. Commuting loans are available for trains and coach season tickets, car parking or for buying a bicycle.

Payroll Giving

We make it easy for all employees to make regular donations to charities. Our tax efficient and convenient Payroll Giving service deducts through your monthly pay so you make a net saving.

Flexible working and well-being benefits

Flexible working times

We allow some informal flexibility around start, finish and break times. You may find this helpful for your commute and fitting in your responsibilities outside of work.

During busy times, when extra working hours are needed, you can take extra hours worked as time off in lieu at a later date. This arrangement needs approval to ensure it meets business requirements.

Free eye tests

We'll reimburse you the cost of eye tests if you use a computer screen for your work. We'll also contribute to the cost of glasses or contact lenses if the test shows that a new prescription is specifically needed for your job.

Occupational Health (OH) service

Our OH service provides particular expertise about the relationship between health and work. The service also includes expert medical advice in appropriate circumstances.

Employee Assistance Programme (EAP)

We provide access to a free and confidential EAP. The programme offers confidential practical help and counselling on a wide range of issues including marital and family problems, bereavement, health or psychological problems, 24 hours a day.

We offer changing and shower facilities at our larger offices with bike parking facilities at many of our locations. The Historic England Sports and Social Club support various activities from yoga, scrabble, quizzes, go-karting to five-a-side football as well as organising fun and some unusual events, theatre trips and 'access all areas' site visits.
