An opportunity has arisen for a position of Assistant Medical Secretary, based in the Laboratory Medicine Admin Department at York Hospital. The post holder will work within an established team of Secretaries to provide full secretarial support to the Haematology Consultant Team.

We are seeking a highly motivated, enthusiastic and flexible individual, who can work effectively using their own initiative, as well as being part of the Secretarial Team. The successful candidate will provide support to the Medical Secretaries and their Consultant Teams, and be a proficient audio typist with the ability to transcribe complex audio tapes and digital dictation, which will include complicated medical terminology. They will also be required to take and transcribe minutes at regular Haematology/Blood Transfusion meetings.

Excellent administration/secretarial skills and audio-typing experience are vital, as well as a good understanding of customer relations. You will regularly be required to deal with queries from patients, Consultants and GPs and use electronic work lists to actively monitor patient pathways together with general administrative tasks.

The successful candidate will be required to work well under pressure, with the ability to prioritise the demands of a busy office and manage their time and workload efficiently and effectively. They will also be required to work unsupervised, and communicate with Consultants on a regular basis.

The successful candidate will possess GCSE English Language grade C or above (or equivalent), have demonstrable typing skills, with a relevant qualification of at least RSA II (or equivalent), as well as previous clerical/administrative experience, if possible in a healthcare setting. A knowledge of medical terminology would be desirable but not essential as training will be provided to the successful candidate. A typing test will be included as part of the interview process.

This is a part time position i.e. 22.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday.

DBS Checks

All new employees starting work with us will be charged for the cost of their DBS check if it is required for the role. The cost will be deducted from your salary either in 1 payment or over a six month period once you start employment. The charges are currently £27.20 for a standard check and £44.20 for an enhanced check. The level of check will be determined by the post you are applying for.
