There is a huge thirst from decision makers across the business to use data, and insights derived from analysis, to drive better commercial decisions. The recently formed Commercial Analytics team is embarking on a journey to completely change the way people in the organisation interact with data. Key stakeholders across the business, from board level down, are looking for ways in which data can enable significant growth in revenue and profitability.

The team will design and implement a completely new software stack, build a robust fact base using internal and external datasets, and work closely with subject matter experts throughout the business to deliver insightful analysis.

The Commercial Analytics team will act as the centre of excellence for analytics within the business. It will be responsible for the datasets and infrastructure used for analytics, develop best practices and have oversight over all commercial analytics throughout the business. Individual analysts will spend some time semi-embedded within core business functions (such as Product, Sales, Pricing and Finance), leading the analysis for this part of the business, and rotated periodically to gain exposure to other areas.

We are looking for a Commercial Analyst to join this new team. Since this is a new team the role is likely to evolve over time and there is significant scope for the analyst to shape the role according to their preferences.

The analyst will be responsible for producing high quality and high impact analytics to support decision making across the business. This is likely to require the analyst to identify relevant internal and external data sets for their analysis, design and build the analysis, review their findings with a variety of stakeholders, and iterate in order to reach a high quality answer.

They will report to the Head of Commercial Analytics, and will often be semi-embedded within a functional team.

They will bring a mix of commercial, technical and soft skills, such as:

  • Business understanding: the ability to understand complex business processes and identify ways in which data could be leveraged to describe these processes
  • Commercial awareness: an appreciation for the factors that drive profitability within a business
  • Insight development: the ability to answer commercial questions using data and analytic methods
  • Storytelling: distilling insights from a wide variety of analyses and building a story that helps others to understand the methodology and implications of your analysis. Includes the effective use of data visualisation to draw out themes from analysis
  • A technical self-starter, able to learn new tools quickly and solve problems independently
  • Familiarity with modern business intelligence tools
  • Strong numerical abilities
  • Understanding of common analytic methodologies and keenness to master advanced techniques (such as statistical machine learning methods)
Soft skills
  • Ability to work effectively with stakeholders across the business (such as IT, commercial functions and senior executives)
  • Clear, succinct and accurate communication, avoiding jargon and adding structure where appropriate
  • Able to give others the confidence to leverage analytics for major commercial decisions
At heart, the Commercial Analyst will be a curious problem solver. They will balance the need for scientific rigour with the need to move quickly, and be comfortable in dealing with uncertainty. They will be constantly prioritising their time in order to deliver the most impact to the business as quickly as possible.

The role will be based in SHL's headquarters in Thames Ditton, London. There is scope for working remotely for part of the week.

  • Familiarity with relational databases and SQL
  • Solid understanding of database design and analytic principles (such as normalisation and other schema models)
  • Working knowledge with one or more modern visualisation tools such as Tableau, Qlickview, Looker, PowerBI
  • Familiarity with one or more ETL / modelling tool such as Alteryx, Pentaho, Rapidminer, SAS, Dataiku, Python or R
  • Inquisitive mindset
  • Gathers comprehensive information to support decision making
  • Seeks to contextualise one issue as part of a larger system
  • Sets high standards for quality
  • Shares expertise and knowledge with others
  • Promotes new ideas that may be contrary to commonly held opinion
  • Takes initiative, acts with confidence and works under own direction
  • Tackles demanding goals with enthusiasm
  • Always on the look-out for ways of doing things better, perhaps by leveraging new tools or identifying more effective methodologies
  • Keeps up to date with market and technology trends
Nice to have
  • Coding experience in any programming language
  • Applied experience in statistics
The applicant must have the right to work in the UK.

Benefits of working at SHL
  • A culture comprised of diverse, global teams who have a passion for collaboration and client service
  • A comprehensive benefits package from day one
  • Support, coaching, and on-the-job development to achieve career success
  • The ability to engage, influence, and impact a broad array of the world's leading executives
