As Commercial Finance Manager - E-Comm, Merch and Tech, you are a key leader in the MATCHESFASHION Finance Team. Your role will report into the Head of Commercial Finance, though day to day you will spend a lot of time with the Head of E-Comm, Head of B&M and the CTO (all on Exec Board) and their leadership teams as the key finance leader, proactively supporting the teams to drive effective commercial decision-making. This role is particularly key in connecting the E-Comm and B&M "worlds", ensuring consistency and joined up thinking. The role requires high levels of judgment in knowing where to escalate issues to leadership through relevant, accurate, insightful and timely reporting and analysis, and where to manage independently. You will also support the commercial planning process, co-owning assumptions and planning methodology with the business teams. You will manage two Analysts and be able to own a wide remit both through individual contribution and through your team.

Business Partnering
  • Finance business partner for the E-Commerce, Buying and Merchandise (B&M) and Tech teams. E-Commerce and B&M are accountable for delivering sales and margin growth for the business, while Tech teams trade-off multiple options to help build foundations for growth and improving customer experience.
  • Key role that can link the B&M and E-Commerce functions, ensuring the plans dovetail, flagging any differences and being the independent "referee" in the regular areas of disagreement.
  • You will work alongside the relevant members of the Exec Board and their teams in developing their detailed plans and strategy. This will range from bottoms up detailed plans on Brand Buys, to large strategic projects (e.g. launching a new category of country).
  • Co-own planning inputs with the functional leaders. As well as granular models, you will have an ability to think strategically and partner on identifying and prioritizing growth drivers.
  • Influence business partners to optimize and improve decision making, combining commercial understanding, financial expertise of how results roll-up and an ability to articulate ideas clearly through process, write-ups and frameworks.
  • Partner on business cases, adding a financial lens and ensuring that, where appropriate, other alternatives are considered and given sufficient weighting.
Financial control/governance
  • Own mechanisms and governance around key spending, particularly in marketing and promotions effectiveness- ensuring we have clear objectives and are able to measure an ROI.
  • Play an active ownership role in the recurring governance of the business - e.g. running the weekly and monthly trading meetings.
  • Build financial control processes that ensure there are appropriate levels of scrutiny and approval in your partner teams.
  • First point of contact for CFO/CEO to understand trade, future plans, risks and opportunities.
  • Participate in recurring month end processes, understanding there is depth of knowledge and context to explain trends impacting on financials (both historic and future).

People management
  • Manage team of two Analysts - ensuring that they can grow as finance leaders and delivering results through them across the other key commercial layers of the business (e.g. Private Label).
  • Ensure strong performance management by setting clear objectives, and following this up on at least a monthly basis to track progress and correct as required
  • Deliver high employee engagement.
  • Drive "stretch" projects outside of your immediate area to improve knowledge or processes across the wider Finance Team or make material progress on a business problem.
  • Communicate financial information to non-finance people at all levels of the business
  • Be a key part of the Finance Leadership community, including driving learning agenda, running sections of the Finance Town Halls etc.


  • ACA/CIMA/ACCA Qualification
  • 5+ years of post-qualification experience in Finance, FP&A or Business Partnering
  • Experience with management information across multiple functions, and an ability to extract insight and action-orientated steer for business partners.
  • Demonstrable experience of analysing complex data and proven experience of influencing business decisions using this.
  • Experience of working with and influencing different business leaders, functions and personality types, with proven examples of improving decision making and challenging prevailing opinions.
  • Experience in Customer-facing retail businesses (ideally online)
  • Process improvement experience
  • Experience of managing analysts and developing them as finance leaders.

  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel, and comfortable using Word/Powerpoint
  • Comfortable working with "big data", financial systems, financial modeling and analysis. Balancing this, an ability to articulate clearly and simplify to "big picture" for a non-finance audience.
  • Able to work under pressure in a timely manner without sacrificing quality
  • Self-starter, with the ability to independently manage multiple business stakeholders and issues concurrently and tenaciously.
  • Highly analytical and detail oriented
  • Proven ability to develop new ideas, challenge the status quo and drive creative solutions
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills that can flex to audience (i.e. articulate financial performance, but also be able to simplify and keep action orientated for business partners).
  • Ability to see the bigger picture, lifting head out of the detail and focusing time and partners' attention on the things that matter.
  • Utilises broad networks across internal functions and externally to gather multiple perspectives and improve the overall quality of decision making.
  • An interest in Fashion and Luxury brands and the associated industries.
