Job Title: Commissioning Editor - Daytime & Live Show (Leeds)

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION
Daytime is responsible for commissioning new and long running series such as Come Dine with Me, Escape to the Chateau: DIY, Extreme Cakemakers and Find It
Fix It Flog It. The department also commissions a range of series for More4, including 999: On The Frontline and My Floating Home.

JOB PURPOSE
Working to the Head of Daytime, the Commissioning Editor, Daytime & Live Show will have day to day responsibility for the new daily live show based out of
Leeds, along with commissioning returning series to keep C4 daytime at the forefront of popular factual television .

They will manage the live daily show overseeing all aspects of the production from the channel perspective. They will also be responsible for ensuring
programmes are delivered on time and on budget and ensuring the high quality of returning series and new formats. They will work with independent production
companies to generate original and innovative new programmes; they will identify and develop C4 talent; and they will work closely with internal departments
such as legal and compliance, commercial affairs, sales and marketing.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• In partnership with the Head of Daytime, commission and oversee the launch of the new Channel 4 daily live show from Leeds. Once launched, be responsible
for all aspects of the show’s continuing development so that it delivers on the channel’s ambition for the show to be a key part of C4’s daytime output.
• Originate, develop and commission innovative new programmes for other daytime slots on weekdays and at weekends.
• Initiate and manage positive, creative relationships with a wide range of indies to ensure a steady supply of ground-breaking ideas.
• Identify and nurture new on and off screen talent, from a variety of perspectives and backgrounds as part of daytime’s commitment to C4’s diversity
objectives.
• Manage and quality control a wide range of often challenging new and returning series to ensure they are delivered on time and on budget, working where
necessary with compliance and press to deal with any issues that may arise.
• Broaden the range of Independent producers and on screen talent daytime works with, particularly in the nations and regions, as part of C4’s All 4 The
UK strategy
• Work effectively with other parts of the Channel – e.g. legal and compliance, marketing, press, scheduling to promote and market programmes and ensure
their smooth delivery to air.
• Work closely with Cross Platform to maximise the viewer experience and the impact of programmes across a variety of platforms.

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Technical & Professional Skills
• Track record in either commissioning or at a minimum series producing, but preferably executive producing, a new/returning live, topical magazine programme.
• Strong knowledge of all aspects of live TV production, from budgeting to compliance, talent management to editorial development of an on-going series.
• Must have worked at a minimum series producer level making or commissioning other, non-live shows which demonstrate a Channel 4/E4/More 4 features sensibility,
with good knowledge of all related financial, legal and compliance issues.
• Good understanding of the commissioning process from initial idea development through production to transmission.
• Good knowledge of trends in daytime programmes, on and off screen talent and an ability to help develop the department’s overall strategy.
• Will be required to demonstrate a high degree of editorial judgement in the execution of programmes, exceptional personal integrity and insight into the Channel 4
brand and values – particularly in relation to the live daily show.
• Exceptional communication and influencing skills, both when it comes to managing programme output and developing relationships and ideas with independent producers.
• Ability to combine the demands of the live show with managing a relatively high volume of non-live daytime programmes and developing new ideas with a broad range of
independent producers.
• Will be expected to develop these new ideas for the daytime slate and discuss these at departmental routines.

Autonomy/Judgement/Decision Making
• Job requires ability to make clear, quick and independent decisions in the high-pressure environment of commissioning a live-daily show, whilst also knowing when
they should refer issues to HoD, compliance etc.
• Similar decision-making ability in relation to non-live output.
• Ability to take decisions on idea development where necessary without reference to HoD and ensure those decisions are consistent with the department’s strategy.
• Ability to clearly communicate the channel’s viewpoint on an idea to independent producers and talent within a definite timeframe.

Managing Resources
• Determines budgets for projects alongside Commercial Affairs with overall responsibility resting with Commissioning Head.
• Working within the constraints of budget to commission and deliver the best possible shows.
• Must be able to quickly identify potential overspends or other budgetary issues in series – particularly in relation to the live show - and help develop strategies
to deal with them, in partnership with HoD and programme finance management.

Relationship Management
• Manage day to day relationship with the independent production company that is commissioned to make the live daily show, to ensure that they deliver the series on
budget, compliant with the OFCOM code and meeting the channel’s editorial ambitions.
• Manage similar relationships with independent production companies making non-live shows.
• Work with C4’s head of on-screen talent to manage relationships with current roster of presenters and develop new talent.

Complexity/Problem Solving
• High degree of creativity required when developing ideas and problem solving with talent and production companies on programme content.
• Role holder will need to assess the impact of any contentious material on the general public, working with compliance team and press to manage any potential negative
fall-out.

Business Impact/Strategic Perspective
• Role impacts on short to medium term business targets and plans for programmes at least a year in advance whilst maintaining the flexibility to act swiftly on
exclusivity deals, cultural climate, trends and opportunities
• Daytime is important part of the Channel’s programming strategy and impacts heavily on its delivery of on-screen and off-screen diversity targets.
• Working with the Head of Daytime to help drive the increase in Creative spend in the nations and regions
• Working simultaneously with the Managing Director of the Nations & Regions to deliver on the growth of the regional presence and perception of Channel 4

heart.

From October 2019 C4 staff will be based in the newly refurbished West Gate on Grace Street until their new home is ready.
