Exeter, GB As our Data Science, the starting salary will be £37,418 with opportunities to progress to £41,159 over time. Our total reward package is potentially worth up to £54,466 per annum.

This role will form part of the Data Management function which is being created to deliver a capability to provide insights about the Data Supply Chain of the Met Office. The Data Supply Chain is the pipeline that produces all the production data for the Met Office. Production data can be delivered directly to customers as Data Services or used by other functions to create Information and Advisory/consultancy services for customers.


Background

Job Purpose

The primary purpose is to provide valuable insights, based on factual data and information.

Job Responsibilities

1. Have recognised technical ability in a number of data science specialisms and provide detailed technical advice.
2. Using data from a variety of systems you will need to research, and answer questions posed by a variety of internal stakeholders such as Product Managers, Architects, Executive Directors, etc.
3. Work with technologists to source appropriate data and create shareable models and tools – documenting them so that other technically minded users can also access and undertake analysis to gain insights.
4. Initially, the focus will be to work on the “Data Flow” problem, modelling and providing insights about the end-to-end post-processing and production of Data Products. It is anticipated that this role will also encompass metric and insight analysis including metadata, data discovery, volumetric usage, etc.
5. You will apply data science techniques to present, communicate and disseminate data science products effectively, appropriately and with high impact.
6. You understand the data life cycle, how to collaborate with others to best effect and what tools and techniques would be most appropriate.
7. Explore innovative data science tools and techniques to address business challenges. 8. Develop data science capability across the organisation and externally as appropriate.

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

1. Excellent communication skills: the core value is in providing insight, so skill in the presentation of data and the explanation of findings to a technical and non-technical audience is key.
2. Excellent data management skills: the variety of data sources and data types is very large and heterogenous. Key to the role is working with technologists to capture this and have it organised and accessible in a more homogenous model
3. Excellent data analysis and manipulation skills: the ability to extract insights from large volumes of structured data using modern tools is necessary.
4. Good technical knowledge: will need to demonstrate a good understanding of a variety of tools and technologies; such as Python, Jupyter Notebooks, RDBMS and Graph database technologies.
5. Evidence of strong attention to detail and a methodical approach from data entry to reconciliation across systems,
6. Strong time management skills: balancing the demands of insight requests against the ongoing development of the underlying models and technology

Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

1. Ability to work alone and as part of multi-disciplinary teams.
2. Good training skills to enable others to access and use the developed data models to make informed decisions.
