Here at the Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust, we have been on an exciting journey of transformation. This has been underpinned by sound financial planning, management and governance, which has seen the Trust continually deliver on its statutory financial duties.

However, we have ambitious plans to do more, further exerting and widening our influence within the NHS in Wales, wider public sector and with emergency service partners. To do this, we need to build on and continue our growing reputation for financial expertise, both within the organisation and the wider NHS in Wales.

We are currently looking to recruit an experienced, professional, and highly motivated Deputy Director of Finance with a depth of leadership experience to continue to take forward the Trust's Finance Department.

This is a key role for the Trust, working closely with the Executive Director of Finance & Corporate Resources and other members of the Executive team to further develop the financial culture, systems and practice within the Finance department and the wider Trust. As Deputy Director of Finance & Corporate Resources, you will lead the Finance department and its functions on a day to day basis, includes being a key link with the NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership Procurement function, and play a key leadership role as part of the wider NHS Wales finance community. You will bring your experience, vision, strategic thinking and energy to help shape and develop the Trust's strategic direction and successfully manage its implementation. This includes taking the lead for the Trust on the financial planning for the ongoing revenue investment required into the Trust following recent Demand & Capacity reviews, delivery of a range of strategic capital investments and further modernising the Trust's fleet.

To succeed in this role you will:
  • Be a qualified accountant with significant experience working in a medium - large, complex organisation and have prior experience of developing large scale and complex Business Cases;
  • Be an experienced and strategic leader, team player with a 'can do' attitude and strong communication and influencing skills, adding significant value to team and organisation;
  • Work well with the Trust's Commissioners to maximum organisational benefit;
  • Have experience of leading and working with Finance and Operational teams alike in the development of financial plans that enable the delivery of operational requirements, high quality care and financial sustainability;
  • Have excellent verbal and written communication skills and demonstrable experience of leading finance and other corporate functions to develop a mature and rounded service;
  • Be financially and politically aware, bringing a high level of knowledge on the delivery of transformational changes within the complex organisation and system and acting as an ambassador for the Trust when working with many external NHS organisations and the wider health economy;
  • Have a strategic lens, while also being able to demonstrate a sound grip on the operational delivery; a proven ability to develop a financial culture that enables the delivery of high quality services, complemented by resilience and a collaborative approach.
The Welsh Ambulance Service covers the whole of Wales, and while the post will be based initially at our office in Cwmbran, there will be a need for flexibility and requirement for regular travel across Wales. Given recent events an element of home working will also be possible and no doubt desirable in at least the short to medium term.

The Trust recognises the need for its workforce to represent the diversity of the population it serves across the whole of Wales, and seeks to create an environment where diversity is celebrated and inclusivity matters. We are also keen to break down any barriers into the Trust, and would encourage applications from under-represented groups, including those from BME communities and disability groups.

We look forward to receiving your application form and hope to be supporting you with your career in the Welsh Ambulance Service in the near future.

Join our #RemarkablePeople at #TeamWAST and be remarkable too.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Closing date: 18th October 2020
