What's the role about?

Being part of the John Lewis Partnership's (JLP) Architecture Team will be challenging, fascinating and rewarding. You will be responsible for establishing the technology approach for business propositions or our supporting key technical capabilities. You will, working with your domain and team, help to inform the thinking of colleagues from across the business as well as within Technology and Change (T&C).

We are looking for experienced IT professionals with a good knowledge of enterprise architecture techniques and approaches aligned with a great understanding of the business or technical domain that you will be working in.

This specific role will be responsible for the architecture (strategy, roadmaps, applications) for the Merchandise Operations (ERP) technologies used across both John Lewis and Waitrose. From a business process point of view, this covers all the technology that supports the Merchandise and Product Supply functions in John Lewis and Waitrose, from the forecasting and planning of both customer and replenishment demand, through to the execution of those purchase and replenishment orders and subsequent management of all inventory movements, both from a financial (stock ledger) and operational point of view.

With both John Lewis and Waitrose having embarked or currently running business transformation programmes in this domain, this role covers a critical area of the business and architecture (technology) landscape and is key to simplifying and reducing the complexity of the technology landscape in this area.

What you'll be doing as an Enterprise Architect:

The JLP Architecture Team is part of the T&C Division which supports approximately 70,000 employees, 360 stores, a turnover of over £11bn, and a transformational IT expenditure in excess of £200m pa.

You will work within an architecture domain under a Lead Enterprise Architect, and alongside other enterprise and solution architects, to set out the change required to create or enhance compelling business or technical propositions that maximise the potential of our two great brands, John Lewis and Waitrose, and the digital and physical experiences we can offer the customer.

The role blends expertise in the respective technology and/or market areas, along with a strategic outlook, commercial awareness, ability to influence, tenacity, and capability to manage ambiguity and stakeholder relationships to ensure an investment and delivery profile that is aligned to the strategy you create.

What you'll have:

Experience of work as an Enterprise Architect or with Enterprise Architecture techniques and approaches, aligned with a good understanding of the business or technical domain that you will be working in.

Empower and influence others to make decisions, resolve challenges and deliver outcomes that are in line with the strategy. Work with project managers and product owners to agree changes to capabilities that achieve business and technology outcomes. Read stakeholders well, understand their motivations and adjust style accordingly in order to achieve critical level of influence

Business or Technical Domain Knowledge:

Understand how the business or technical capabilities that support JLP or a Product and Platform operate with reference to marketplace good practice.

For Business Domain Knowledge - Understand the capabilities and processes that support forecasting, ordering and inventory management processes within General Merchandise and Grocery. Evaluate the level of capability required to achieve stated business outcomes and compare with as-is and marketplace.

For Technical Domain Knowledge - Understand the technologies and JLPs implementation of them within your domain and the constraints or competitive advantage they offer. Track vendor roadmaps and innovations. Specifically looking for the following:
  • Experience and understanding of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and associated technologies (such as store inventory management) that support forecasting, ordering and inventory management processes
  • Understanding of the key challenges and pitfalls in architecting and implementing Enterprise Resource Planning solutions and evidence of mitigating or overcoming those
  • Experience of working with Oracle Retail Merchandising Operations Management solution set desirable
  • Experience of working with following vendors beneficial - Oracle Retail, Blue Yonder (formerly JDA) or similar ERP vendors (such as SAP).
Sequence Change to Deliver Incremental Business Value:

Establish credible project or product roadmaps to drive change in business or technical capabilities that maximise business benefit and cost of ownership. Be able to balance strategic architectural vision with pragmatism and options to achieve that vision in an iterative manner, that drives maximum business value where possible.

Assure Architectural Integrity and Strategic Alignment:

Ensure that business and technology solution designs, and project or product roadmaps are professionally managed via the 'Architecture Guardrails'.

What else you could bring:

Strategy Development & Strategic Planning:

Set out the impact of business and technology strategies on domain roadmaps and product & project plans. Be a subject matter expert within your field of experience to support strategy development.

Management of Risk, Policy & Legal Compliance:

Understand the impact on projects and products of changing policy or legislation. Balance cost, complexity and risk when agreeing with business service owners how to achieve compliance.

Promoting role of Architecture in large scale business transformation programmes:

Experience of promoting and successfully championing architecture role in large scale transformation programmes (design authorities; arch role in delivery programme).

Working alongside System Implementation providers:

Experience of working effectively with or alongside system implementation vendors, preferably on a large scale ERP transformation programme. Ability to deal with conflicting interests (SI, internal technology teams, business teams) and drive towards effective resolution of those conflicts.

Ways of working and time management:

Ability to effectively manage a pipeline of work and proficient in management of your time. Can provide structure to ambiguous asks or challenges. Works in a collaborative manner both within technology and business teams.

Monitor and advise on current technology, retail and socio-economic trends:

Stay up to date with trends and shifts in technology, retail and the wider world. Set this understanding against the business or technology context within which you are working.

Continuous Profession Development:

You'll have played an active role in the development of an effective Architecture function and in developing your personal and professional skills and capabilities.
