We work with our customers to understand the challenges they are facing and develop and deliver bespoke services to solve these critical industry problems. We are looking to recruit into our Graduate Scheme within this area to work with our teams on using weather and climate science to answer real industry problems.

You will develop an understanding of industry and customer needs and combine this with your business or marketing background to help take products & services to market and deliver commercial projects. You will work across a range of sectors, such as energy, transport and infrastructure and you will work in a multidisciplinary environment undertaking projects with both business and science or technical teams allowing you to develop multi-disciplinary skills and get a real insight across our business. Job Purpose:

You will work with sales, marketing and management teams across our Business Group on the development and delivery of weather & climate services for industry. The graduate scheme is a structured programme where you will undertake a range of real projects working with experts from across the organisation to build your skills and experience. The first year your projects will be selected to give you a broad range of experiences to ensure you get an opportunity to see the breadth of the work we do. In the second year, you will be able to help shape the direction of your projects based on your skills and interests within our business requirements. Your personal development is important to us, you will have the opportunity to undertake both formal and on the job training, you will be buddied with a Graduate who has come through the scheme, you will work with a broad range of people to understand the wide variety of work undertaken at the Met Office and will work on ensuring real products or services meet customer as well as business needs.

Job Responsibilities:

This is an exciting opportunity for an individual who has a business or marketing background, who has the ability to understand scientific / technical content and is passionate about the transformation of science into products and services that solve customer challenges from across industry. The role of a Graduate within our Business Group is varied, and you will work with other Graduates also on the scheme who may come from a wide range of backgrounds. As a Graduate coming in with a business or marketing background some of your responsibilities will include:

  • To support and carry out the business & marketing activities required to ensure the timely delivery of agreed project outputs for the benefit of customers. Projects might include promotions, product development, pricing, business analysis, market research, product or market planning.
  • To develop an understanding of customers and markets that assists you to contribute to the planning of your projects.
  • To contribute to the presentation and documentation of your projects’ work to communicate advice and maintain our professional capability and integrity.
  • To actively engage in a wide range of projects and to develop the skills required to further your career.

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities:

To become a Graduate on our Graduate Scheme you will need to be someone who:

  1. Has graduated from a degree in business, marketing, management or other relevant subject, We are particularly interested in hearing from those with a joint honours combining business with a science discipline.
  2. Is keen to learn and build new and varied skills across multiple disciplines of the Met Office.
  3. Is a strong team player with the ability to work as a productive member of a team to deliver projects.
  4. Has the ability to drive and progress project and tasks with a focus on results.
  5. Understands and appreciates customer needs and is passionate about delivering great customer experience.
  6. Has excellent written and oral communication skills.
  7. Can work with and analyse data with a strong aptitude for research.


Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Abilities:

In addition, desirably you would also be someone who can also demonstrate:

  1. Previous work experience in a relevant field


Additional Supplementary Information:

This is a Fixed Term Appointment for the period of 2 years. The starting date of this vacancy is flexible; however, we are aiming for a start date of Autumn 2019.

This role will nominally be based in Exeter but we will consider applicants wishing to work elsewhere within the UK. We are open to this job being performed  with different working patterns (e.g. part-time, job share), if this is of interest to you please discuss at interview.
