The FT is as much a product and technology company as it is a journalism company. In FT Product and Technology much of our recent success has come from innovation in our digital products and services and we know that our future success will depend on it. We span three organisations: Product, Technology and Delivery. Since 2016 we have been led by Chief Product and Information Officer Cait O’Riordan. Don’t expect a stuffy finance environment. The product org is composed of ~60 people, mostly product managers, customer researchers, product designers and business analysts. We work primarily in London and Sofia, Bulgaria. Our purpose is to create continued innovation in the FT’s digital products and services. We do a lot to deliver great products, but we believe our most important responsibility is working out what is worth building in the first place. We drive the process of product discovery, working with customers and prototypes to identify solutions that answer the needs of our subscribers and our business. We define outcomes with our colleagues, find opportunities with customers, design solutions with customers, and prioritise delivery to maximise our impact.
The Role / Position Overview
An exciting opportunity is available for a Group Product Manager to help achieve our vision within FT Group which includes FT Specialist titles (Investors Chronicle, The Banker, Pensions Expert, FT Adviser, fDI Intelligence and Professional Wealth management) as well as Business education rankings. To note our FT Group Product & Technology teams are based across both London, UK and Sofia, Bulgaria so we are open to candidates from either location.
FT Specialist provides significant revenue and contribution to the FT. There are more than 16 titles in the portfolio, of which some are within direct accountability of our product and tech teams. Last year we created a cross-functional product and technology team in Sofia to support the needs of the business. The team’s focus is across 3 distinct areas:
- Existing products - protecting existing revenue and profit and enabling outcome-driven development eg: engagement, acquisition and retention;
- Incremental growth from existing products - via product extensions, driving additional revenue; and
- Diversification - growing and diversifying through new growth initiatives into new markets, sectors and industries.
Business education rankings is also a programme which drives significant revenue. The rankings team publishes rankings for prospective MBA students 10 times a year. Underpinned with FT editorial content and special reports and powered by extensive and exclusive FT data and content.
There may be other portfolios in addition to the above.
You will play a key role working with senior commercial and editorial stakeholders, customer experience and technical teams to develop compelling ways to deliver business and customer goals across the portfolios.
Lead a cross-functional team to define the strategy and tactics associated with integrating three currently separate events businesses closer to the centre of the Financial Times organisation.
Collaborate with product and technology peers in other groups to ensure their teams are also aligned and delivering impact contributing to your objectives
Develop relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders, under tight timescales and with numerous competing priorities
Reporting directly to the Product Director, you will ensure the teams success and ensure teams are outcome-driven, understanding impacts they will have on the bottom line.
Deputises for the Product Director, to represent both the strategy and day to day running of the Group/Mission
Makes recommendations on how processes, systems and practices could be improved in order to maintain a high performing group
Line management experience to lead a team of product managers
Required Skills / Experience
Minimum 5 years “full-stack” Product Management experience in developing software or internet products.
Highly analytical with a structured problem-solving approach. Metrics-driven, with previous experience in a culture of data-and fact-based decision-making.
Ability to deliver impact - laser focus execution coupled with commercial awareness.
Experience in leading teams in a cross-functional, agile environment.
Self-motivated,“do-er”, willing to work hands-on.
Knowledge of multiple functional areas, including product management, engineering, UX/UI, sales, customer support, finance or marketing.
A team player, with a strong ability to work collaboratively across the organisation.
Knowledge of the media industry and of how large media companies operate
Experience In Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, related technical field.
Good understanding of B2B products and markets.
