As a Head of Architecture and Design at HS2 you will be responsible for leading the design, development and delivery of high-quality IT systems and strategy across the business now and in the future. The Head of Architecture & Design ensures HS2 has the required capabilities of Service Design and Technical architecture. The role's purpose is to influence, lead and mentor others, while assuring best practice standards are set and maintained at all times.

The IT department enables HS2 to be a catalyst for growth across Britain. Setting a new standard in infrastructure delivery, resilient operations and passenger experience by applying the best in innovative design and construction. As a member of the IT Senior Leadership team at HS2, you will have responsibility for your function across the HS2 programme, driving productivity and innovation and working collaboratively with business leadership in order to provide optimised outcomes for the business and its partners.

This role has been aligned to the Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) Profession Capability Framework. The DDaT Framework sets out a common language to describe roles and defines the skills required. About the role:

  • To have overall responsibility for leading the Architecture and Design Function, comprising of internal HS2, its partners and external resources. Maturing the capabilities of the function and maintaining enough capacity to meet business demand
  • To be accountable for informing and governing the development and delivery of the agile Enterprise Architecture including the Architecture and Solution Building Blocks
  • To be accountable for budget planning & forecasting of the Enterprise Architecture, to identify risks and analyse potential impact
  • To be responsible for defining an agile Enterprise Architecture Framework, including strategic domain architecture and roadmaps for implementation of the Platform, Product and Services
  • To be accountable for leading technology and vendor selection processes, supporting governance processes through assessment of architecture alignment with HS2's strategy
  • To be accountable for leading, developing and inspiring the Architectural & Design department;, sharing knowledge and expertise in the practice of User Centric Design, Enterprise Architecture, associated practices and building an architecture community fully aware of the latest HS2 IT strategy and guidance
  • To be responsible for defining and implementing policies, principles and processes for the definition, maintenance and management of the function
  • To be responsible for collaborating with business stakeholders to develop the IT strategy and the associated sub-strategies, artefacts and plans
  • To be responsible for governing and solving complex and high-risk issues and risks
  • To be accountable for the collaboration between the IT directorate and HS2 business and partners to facilitate the alignment of IT capabilities to their needs
  • Actively promote and embed Equality Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in all your work, and support and comply with all organisational initiatives, policies and procedures on EDI.


Qualifications:

About You:
  • Agile working. Ability to coach and lead teams in Agile and Lean practices
  • Evidence- and context-based design. Ability to design IT systems for use across multiple services and identify the most effective approach out of a variety of approaches
  • Knowledge of strategic enterprise architecture technological trends, and their practical application
  • Knowledge of IT Operating Model best practice, development and implementation methods and approach
  • Knowledge of capability maturity model integration, process and behavioural models in the context of Architecture and Design
  • Experience of developing, mobilising and maturing an Architecture and Design function, end to end, within a complex or highly regulated environment with multiple stakeholders
  • Experience of sharing and using the best practice User Centric Design to keep teams informed and on track to deliver the best possible project outcome
  • Experience of defining and working with an Enterprise Architect framework in a Platform, Product or Services environment
  • Experience of delivering complex/challenging IT capabilities, acting as an expert management of risk
  • Experience of using a variety of methods of prototyping
  • Experience of using architecture and design tooling
  • Experience of prioritising spend based on return on investment
  • Experience of producing Management and Business Information reports, for the purpose of governance and audit requirements
  • Experience of collaborating with or managing suppliers and vendors
