Head of Data Strategy
Job Role
The Data Strategy and Governance team exists to initiate and lead data-led opportunities that typically span multiple teams and departments. These opportunities are a combination of identifying future value in data, by using existing data in new ways, or using new data (Strategy) as well as protecting the value we currently realise from data we already have, and may have in the future (Governance).
This role is centred on Strategy, but is required to work in partnership with the sister Head of Data Governance role/team, to ensure any new/different uses of data consider the ways in which we protect its value in the future. The value this role realises (by taking a pan-FT view), is not considered elsewhere in the organisation, so the DS&G team is required to focus on realising that, with roles centred around initiating and leading, achieved through forming effective partnerships across all corners of the business.
Key Responsibilities
In broad terms, this role exists to:
1) Identify future opportunities
2) Help size opportunities
3) Undertake/support the top level analysis of what is required to realise value
4) Align necessary stakeholders
5) Partner with Delivery to drive initiatives forward and help coordinate cross-functional effort
It will achieve the above by:
Working across the future subs strategy pillars to represent data requirements and to identify and size commercial opportunities through the use of new data or use of existing data in new ways
Leading on the translation of growth opportunities into a proposed set of activities to realise benefits
Leveraging analytical and technical support from other teams to achieve the above
Ensuring that forward looking requirements for pan-FT data value are demanded across the organisation
Representing a holistic view of the FT’s data ecosystem to other groups in order to maximise value
Questioning existing data use and workflows to better understand areas of opportunity
Maintaining a position of independence to guide the business to the best outcome for FT as a whole
Exploring the opportunity for FT to monetise its data assets (including content, readership and audience data).
Person requirements
A proactive role required to identify growth opportunities powered by data (new or existing)
Comfortable challenging established practices where further value could be unlocked
Possess both an analytical and commercial mindset with a strong understanding of monetising data
Required to be able to quantify business benefit and produce specific proposals and strategies to realise opportunities
To contribute to ideas for specific activities to realise benefits
Deep understand of the commercial operations of the business
Confident and compelling when pitching to key stakeholders from across the business including Data Governance Council and the Missions
