DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION
The Daytime Department is responsible for a wide range of Daytime series, encompassing quiz, fact ent, pop docs and live. Some of the channel’s most
important programmes transmit in Daytime (for example, Countdown, Escape to the Chateux DIY, Four in a Bed, Come Dine with Me, £100k Drop, A Place in
the Sun, Extreme Cakemakers), and some of our biggest talent are Daytime stars (including Nick Hewer, Rachel Riley, Kirstie Allsopp, Dick & Angel to
name a few). The department commissions mainly for 3pm, 4pm, and 5pm, and commissions both 60 minute and 30 minute series, often in bulk.

JOB PURPOSE
The Role requires someone who has extensive experience of Daytime output, who will provide strong creative leadership to their team, with particular
attention to oversight of the new, live, daily show. You will be required to continue to nurture our successes, whilst also identifying, developing,
leading and commissioning the next generation of Daytime programmes. The content of Daytime commissions under your leadership must be innovative and
distinctive, but at the same time, popular in terms of critical reviews and ratings.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Manage a team of commissioning editors to ensure that the Channel is the recipient of the best creative ideas and home for the top creative talent
in the industry.
• Engage with the digital agenda and develop and implement a future-focused creative strategy for the department
• Oversee the creation and delivery of the new, live, daily show.
• Implement an inspiring creative strategic vision for Daytime commissions that will show next generation thinking of broad appeal whilst also being
distinctive.
• Oversee the team to commission a range of innovative, distinctive and popular programmes that are critically and ratings popular.
• Ensure the delivery of programmes on time and on budget.
• Originate, develop and commission content to attract new audiences with new kinds of output.
• Monitor and react to the programming of competitor channels which may inform the direction of the Daytime department.
• Work effectively with other parts of the Channel – e.g. legal and compliance, marketing, press, scheduling etc.
• Manage and quality control a wide range of often challenging development projects - overseeing and managing any complexities that arise
• Oversee all creative aspects of the production process including casting, conception of scale, financial approach, editing and marketing.
• Brief and inspire production companies and represent Channel 4 by speaking on public platforms and on panels.
• Ensures high standards in relationships between commissioning and internal and external stakeholders, including response to ideas, access and
diversity of supply.
• Works alongside and develops optimum working relationships with key producers of Daytime material.
• Contribute to overall Channel corporate strategy.

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Technical & Professional Skills
• Proven ability to set an inspiring creative strategic vision for Daytime content.
• Must have a deep knowledge of the independent production sector, legal (OFCOM requirements), Marketing, Finance, Schedules and internal corporate
strategy
• Must have extensive experience in commissioning and/or producing and managing genre related scalable projects

Autonomy/Judgement/Decision Making
• Demonstrable extensive experience and success in regards to decision making across a broad variety of matters within Daytime content and leadership
of team.
• Ability to act with operational independence, undertaking calculated risks and behaving with discretion.

Managing Resources
• Responsibility for managing 3rd party resources such as independent production companies e.g. quality control and developing good working relationships.
• Experience holding budgetary responsibility to manage a portfolio of programming.
• Experience establishing the creative direction of programmes, make up of teams, budget.
• Supervisory experience of immediate reports in terms of leadership, performance management, personal development and appraisals.

Relationship Management
• Ability to work alongside HOD of Popular Factual, immediate team, executives and external clients/industry figures with a focus on developing external
relationships e.g. production companies.
• Ability to explain and interpret information relating to Daytime ideas to production companies so that they understand how to interpret the principles
into programming.
• Extensive internal (e.g. Marketing, Press & Publicity) and external networking (e.g. production companies) required to make the genre a success.
• Ability to balance conflicting viewpoints and gain consensus e.g. when the same ideas are being pitched the role holder will have to mediate and find
the best one to commission.
• Experience negotiating contracts and performance-managing quality of material from production companies.

Complexity/Problem Solving
• Ability to thrive under varied issues which relate both within the discipline and broader cross functional issues e.g. conflict of creative leadership
and budget management, making innovative and ambitious programming on limited budget, talent management.
• Demonstrated experience in using a great deal of analysis and creativity to come up with new programme ideas.

Business Impact/Strategic Perspective
• Experience of delivering to a mixture of short, medium and long term goals with a significant impact on the operational and strategic objectives e.g.
programme planning
• Ability to ensure that programming adheres to the OFCOM code to ensure that complaints or enquiries are kept to a minimum.
• Performance lead nature driven through the high impact on viewers/audience reflected by ratings and feedback based on commissioning decisions.


Channel 4 in Leeds
Once fully operational in 2020, the National HQ will be based at the iconic Majestic building in City Square and will have key creative and digital departments
at its heart.

From October 2019 C4 staff will be based in the newly refurbished West Gate on Grace Street until their new home is ready.

Channel 4 in Glasgow
C4 staff will be based in the Garment Building in Merchant City, one of Glasgow’s most vibrant areas brimming with art, culture, and fashion, complete with
fabulous places to eat and drink. It hosts a number of nationally recognised restaurant names alongside eclectic independent bars, galleries and quirky little
shops to explore.

This is an exciting time to join Channel 4 - best known for being a public-service, free-to-air television network including E4, Film4, and More4. In October
2018, Channel 4 announced that they had selected Leeds, Bristol and Glasgow as locations for their ‘4All the UK Strategy’ to boost the way the Corporation
reflects life outside of London.
