DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION
The commissioning department works with independent producers and studios to source all the content which appears on Channel 4’s portfolio of channels,
and in its digital output. It is charged with attracting broad, commercial audiences as well as delivering the channel’s public service remit.

JOB PURPOSE
To reflect changing consumer behaviour, particularly amongst its key youth audience, the Head of Digital Commissioning will spearhead all digital content
commissioning and acquisition on all digital platforms including All4.

Reporting into the Director of Programmes, the postholder will be editorially responsible for all digital content across all platforms including All 4, social
platforms and apps. This post will coincide with the creation of our Digital Creative Unit in Leeds, an internal agency for social media marketing content and
original digital content distributed on all relevant consumer platforms.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership
• Lead a distributed team of digital executives spread across four of Channel 4’s locations: London, Leeds, Glasgow and Bristol. This team will acquire
content for All 4, commission short form content for the channel’s social feeds and oversee apps and other enhancements of our linear programmes.
• Responsible for setting a vision for Channel 4’s digital presence and ensuring that our digital output is delivering against key metrics.

Strategy
• Work closely with the Head of Product and the Director of Programmes to develop a content acquisition strategy that drives All 4 growth.
• Work with the Head of our upcoming Digital Creative Unit in Leeds, and the channel’s social marketing team to shape the channel’s digital publishing
strategy.
• Develop a podcasting strategy for the channel.

Commissioning
• Oversee all short form commissioning, including digital originations and the digital elements of “one show many platforms” projects
• Work closely with all Genre Heads of Departments and their teams across commissioning.

Editorial standards
• Responsible for ensuring that the highest editorial standards are maintained, and relevant regulations complied with, across all digital platforms.

Budget management
• Overall responsibility for the digital acquisition and origination budget.

Commercial
• Work closely with the Head of Product, the Head of the DCU and the channel’s commercial teams to create new sources of revenue and grow existing revenue
streams.

Integration
• Ensure that driving VOD performance is a key consideration in all commissioning decisions, and that All 4 and linear commissioning priorities are aligned.
• Ensure a smooth flow of information between Channel Management and All 4.

External
• Represent Channel 4 externally on matters relating to changing patterns of viewer behaviour and the channel’s efforts to address these.
• Articulate a clear vision for Channel 4’s presence in a digital world and the content we are seeking to distribute, thus engaging the digital creative
community to work with C4 in helping deliver that vision.

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE & SKILLS

Technical & Professional Skills
• Extensive experience of digital publishing, including video.
• Experience of managing teams.
• Experience of operating in a matrix organisation.
• Track record of using data to identify and meet audience demand.
• Excellent knowledge of changes affecting TV industry and wider content publishing landscape.
• Understanding of the Channel 4 values, vision, strategic direction and objectives.
