DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION
The commissioning department works with independent producers and studios to source all the content which appears on Channel 4's portfolio of channels, and in its digital output. It is charged with attracting broad, commercial audiences as well as delivering the channel's public service remit.

JOB PURPOSE
Working with a range of departments this senior role will be responsible for improving efficiency during the commissioning process. They will oversee how we develop our relationships with independent producers and how we support creative businesses across the UK. Working with the DCO, the Head of Indie Relations will shape our strategy for ensuring that we continue to drive our diversity of supply and strive to work with new production talent and compelling diverse voices from across the UK. They will be responsible for maximising indies commissioning potential - helping to make introductions and partner with appropriate commissioners at Channel 4. Ensuring that Channel 4 is the best possible partner is key to the success of this role.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Support Commissioning Editors to manage the Channel's relationships with the independent sector.
  • Work with departments involved in the commissioning process to improve systems and enhance efficiency.
  • Run and manage the annual Emerging Indie Fund and ensure that all chosen companies are well supported and progressed.
  • Maintain relationships with suppliers around the UK advising smaller producers on how to develop and grow.
  • Ensure that commissioning maintains a joined-up approach to working with independent producers.
  • Ensure that the channel is consistently seeking to develop and commission more indies led by diverse creatives and those based in the Nations and Regions. This role will work with our Head of Hubs and Creative Diversity Team to ensure a coherent strategy.
  • Support the Creative Diversity team to oversee and implement the creative diversity strategy in relation to independent producers ensuring greater representation across supply and work with production partners to deliver this.
  • Work to ensure collaborative, mutually respectful relationship between channel and our suppliers, with particular focus on maintaining a healthy relationship with key suppliers.
  • Oversee and implement our annual indie survey and take responsibility for compiling data to illustrate response.
  • Take responsibility for sharing the response to the survey with the commissioning department and implementing relevant change.
  • Take responsibility for helping to organise producer briefings.
  • Where necessary, help to build key relationships with industry partners.
ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
  • Managing director or equivalent level TV production or broadcasting experience at a major channel
  • Intimate knowledge of the UK TV landscape including broadcasters, indies, and industry bodies
  • Proven ability to work with the highest level of confidentiality and integrity
  • A proven commitment to increasing diversity within the media industry
  • Highly developed existing relationships with creative talent across the industry
  • Proven commitment to work with N&R indies to help develop N&R talent
  • Must be passionate with a strong proven track record of strong decision-making and problem-solving skills
  • Tact and diplomacy

  • Excellent understanding of legal/compliance guidelines.
