As the Lead Logistics HSW Manager on the SCS (Skanska, Costain and STRABAG) joint venture, you will be responsible for supporting the Logistics team across the three sections of the project. You will support the HSW Director, Area HSW Leads and the Logistics Director to ensure the highest of standards in Health, Safety & Wellbeing are upheld.

You will be accountable for providing proactive leadership on the project in line with SCS values to embed and drive a positive health, safety and wellbeing culture. As a key member of the Logistics leadership team, you will have the ability to recognise and develop site specific strategic opportunities and focus resource to meet the project needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leading logistics Health, Safety and wellbeing to support the development of the contract design and safe construction whilst influencing best practice and innovation
  • The logistics function covers a wide range of activities including; rail, road, security, traffic management and highways consents. Specific focus will be the management of rail terminal operational safety at Willesden and West Ruislip for road and rail movements including loading and unloading of trains and HGVs
  • Reviewing and ensuring required HSW documentation is in place
  • Writing policies, procedures and training/briefing materials
  • Reporting performance and incidents into HS2 and SCS monitoring systems
  • Establishing a strong relationship with the SCS HSW Core team and managing your area of responsibility in accordance with any SCS directions
  • Providing operational and functional management advice to the design and delivery teams on the practical implementation of the company’s HSW policies and processes including external stakeholders such as customers if necessary
  • Utilising the wider HSW teams and experience in the SCS businesses to provide the right level of expert advice into the project
  • Ensuring the design teams consider HSW and influence the designing out of these risks
  • Forming strong relationships with the Client and stakeholders ensuring the benefits of SCS are understood and influence the provision of the relevant support framework
  • Providing operational and functional management with advice on the prevention of accidents, incidents and ill health
  • Providing a mentoring role to the SCS joint venture delivery team
  • Undertaking and/or assisting Contract Management in establishing, managing and maintaining relationships with external stakeholders such as local authorities, HSE, EA and others as required and directed
  • Providing advice, guidance and independence with regards to the assessing and managing the supply chain
  • Researching Health, Safety and Wellbeing Issues and best practices.
  • Monitoring, analysis of and reporting of HSS performance.Utilising data to highlight areas of further consideration, evaluation and intervention
  • Carry out investigations of accidents, incidents, dangerous occurrences, near misses and other incidents as directed
  • Preparation and implementation of HSW training/ briefings
  • Promoting best practice, capture best practice and ensure it is fed-back into the business
  • Setting standards and leading by example in the management of HSW
  • Liaising with the other members of the HSW Team and the wider organisation (Skanska, Costain and Strabag) and HS2 with regards to HSW
  • Maintaining own level of knowledge and competency in relations to HSW Management and responsibilities including appropriate qualifications and professional membership
  • Obtaining competency cards in line with the company Competence Card Compliance Standard
  • Understanding the Client and Joint Venture Partners' policies, processes and statutory requirements as they affect the company's operations


Required qualifications, skills, behaviours and attributes


  • Safety, Health and Environmental Diploma or equivalent NCRQ or NVQ
  • Working towards CMIOSH or equivalent
  • Rail experience in a management role
  • Working knowledge of UK legislative arrangements
  • Track-record of achievement in managing safety in rail and road logistics operations
  • Personal Track Safety card
  • Understand the Entity in Charge of Maintenance regulations
  • Understand the Railways and Other Guided Transport Systems (Safety Regulations) 2006 (ROGS)
  • Major and/or Mega Project experience
  • Experience of managing in large teams


  • Safety, Health and/or Environmental Degree
  • Institute of Leadership and Management Level 5
  • Training Qualifications
  • CMIOSH or equivalent
  • Framework Behaviours: Persuasive, Socially Confident, Democratic, Adaptable.
