The IT Infrastructure and Operations teams are responsible for providing the technology to facilitate and enable the Met office to maximise the effectiveness and the benefits that can be achieved from weather and climate data. The Message Switching team, in particular, is responsible for ensuring the reliable and timely reception and transmission of data with external customers and partners and between internal production systems.


Background

The IT Infrastructure and Operations teams are responsible for providing the technology to facilitate and enable the Met office to maximise the effectiveness and the benefits that can be achieved from weather and climate data. The Message Switching team, in particular, is responsible for ensuring the reliable and timely reception and transmission of data with external customers and partners and between internal production systems.

Job Purpose

The primary focus for this role will be to provide operational support for some of the core services which underpin the provision of the Met Office business. Including:

  • The ingestion of data and its delivery to the internal systems that form our production process. Allowing generation of the products and services we provide.
  • The delivery of products and data to our internal users, external customers and both regional and international partners.
  • The Email security for the organisation.

You will be working within a dedicated team and will gain valuable experience in Cloud technologies.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide support for services in an operational IT environment (mainly Linux based). Resolving issues which are affecting business continuity.
  • Resolve Incidents, implement Changes, and manage Problems following the approved processes.
  • Support colleagues in the team and in IT Operations in order to ensure a high quality service is maintained. Including supporting IT Operations colleagues outside normal working hours.
  • Create and maintain documentation to assist and provide guidance for the support of our systems and services.
  • Contribute to improving our services by investigating new capabilities, improving resilience, minimising risk, simplifying unnecessary complexity or reducing costs to the organisation.
  • Assist in the monitoring of systems to inform lifecycle management, capacity planning and service improvements.

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

  1. Enthusiasm and a keen interest in technology.
  2. A positive attitude to making a difference and improving services.
  3. An aptitude for analytical thinking to enable solving technical problems.
  4. A desire to learn and to develop your skills.
  5. A working knowledge of IT Systems. Ideally including experience with one or more of the following: (Windows, Linux, O365, Networking or AWS).
  6. Experience of working as part of a team and contributing to achieving successful outcomes.

Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

  1. Experience of working in an operational IT environment, supporting operational services.
  2. Knowledge of Linux based systems, including scripting (Python, Perl, Shell etc.).
  3. Familiarity with standard communications protocols (TCP/IP, FTP and SMTP) and the willingness to undertake training as necessary.
  4. Demonstrable knowledge of AWS and/or Azure Cloud services.
  5. Experience of managing work in an IT Service Management tool.
  6. Knowledge of ITIL best practice.
