As our Interim Corporate Risk Manager , the starting salary will be £45150.00 with opportunities to progress to £49890.00 over time. New joiners to the Met Office will start on the salary band minima.

Our total reward package is potentially worth up to £63611 per annum, which includes basic salary, potential corporate bonus, employer pension contributions.

Job Purpose

As our Interim Corporate Risk Manager , the job purpose is to lead risk management for the organisation to ensure it is effectively undertaken in order to successfully deliver the Met Office's corporate aims and objectives:

  • Lead on the development and regular review of the Met Office's approach to Risk, Issues and Opportunity management, taking account of industry and government best practice and the outcome of audits.
  • Ensure that Corporate level risks are identified, managed and mitigated through 1-1's with Directors and their SLTs, ensuring these are set in the context of the overall risk appetite of the organisation and its strategy.
  • Report progress on risk identification and mitigation at corporate and departmental level to the Met Office Board, ARAC, Executive, Directorate SLT and Committee meetings, challenging areas of weakness and suggesting corrective action.
  • As a sign-off for Corporate Investment Appraisal business cases, review them to ensure that risks have been identified effectively and suitable mitigation actions are suggested as well as ensure that they can be tracked and monitored effectively
  • Provide corporate training, advice and mentoring to all areas of the organisation on risk, issues, opportunities and benefits management with a particular focus on ensuring consistency of approach across the business and on improving the maturity of benefits management.

This role sits within the Office of the Chief Executive Office (OCEO).

Delivery of our Corporate Strategy is heavily dependent on effective identification and management of risk and opportunity, the monitoring of our progress across the organisation, motivation of the correct behaviours through the setting of targets, and mitigation of risks. Working alongside programme planners, Heads, ADs, the Executive and Board, this high profile post will provide you with a cross-office view of our business. You will work with the OCEO management team to ensure the organisation's assurance framework is fit for purpose and supportive of the corporate strategy and objectives.

As the corporate risk manager you will be responsible for setting the corporate approach to risk and opportunity management, working closely with the Met Office Board and the Audit, Risk and Assurance Committee as well as the Executive, Senior Leaders and wider organisation. You will ensure that all parts of the organisation follow the corporate approach and provide assurance that this is operating effectively. You will work closely with OCEO to ensure that the organisation's assurance framework addresses corporate risks effectively. You will also be responsible for defining and identifying corporate risks that threaten delivery of the objectives set out in the corporate strategy, working closely with individual directors as assigned owners to mitigate these as far as possible. You will also work with the projects (EPO) risk manager to review business cases from a risk perspective to ensure they are managed effectively. You will be recognised as the expert in this field in the Met Office and provide training, mentoring and advice to all areas when needed.

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

  1. Analytical skills and logical thinking to identify, appraise and propose mitigations to risks and opportunities across the business
  2. Personal drive, motivation and initiative to plan and manage own workload, meet deadlines and lead risk process
  3. Strong report writing and verbal presentation skills for presenting to the Exec Board, Audit Committee and MO Board and to provide guidance and training across the business
  4. Strong relationship skills to liaise with risk owners, programme leads, directors and senior leadership around the organisation and promote risk culture
  5. Risk management experience, skills and training/qualifications and/or project management, business analysis and related experience
  6. IT skills to collate, present, and disseminate risk information

Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

  1. Understanding of business cases, financial analysis and benefits management
  2. Understanding of governance, controls and assurance frameworks
