UK Wide Competitive
Fixed term & Full time GLA_R00AOR00613

This is an exciting role that will involve helping to develop and maintain the team's economic databases and statistical models, as well as assisting with the production of economic analysis and forecasts.

At Nationwide we openly put our 15 million members at the centre of every decision we make as a business. Every role, no matter what it's doing, is member focused.

You will be joining the Economics team that sits within our Finance and Efficiency community at Nationwide. The key role of the team is to provide economic analysis and advice to decision makers, to support financial planning and to help highlight emerging risks and opportunities. This is all to help keep Nationwide's finances sustainable, so that the Society can provide the best service possible to its members, now and in the future.

Having a diverse and inclusive workforce is at the heart of our values and is key to our success. Therefore, we welcome and encourage applications from people of all backgrounds including disabled, neurodiverse, ethnically diverse and LGBTQ+ candidates. We're continuing to work hard on making our recruitment process inclusive for everyone and ensuring everyone can be their best self throughout their journey with us. So, if you need any adjustments or additional support from us then let us know in your application form.

Your success isn't based on how long you spend at your desk. You'll have contracted hours, but we're always happy to support flexible working wherever we can. That might mean working from home or different Nationwide offices or agreeing a working pattern to help you balance work and life. We will always strive to find a way that works for everyone.

If we receive a high volume of relevant applications, we may close the advert earlier than the advertised date, so please apply as soon as you can.
What you'll be doing
Help to maintain, develop and improve our statistical models (mostly econometric models) used to forecast key economic and market variables (e.g. house prices and savings market).

Help manage and analyse data in software packages such as Macrobond (no prior knowledge is assumed as training will be provided).

Help monitor and analyse data releases that give insights into developments in the wider economy and the UK household sector.

Assist with the production of economic and market forecasts and effectively communicate rationale for projections by presenting results and drafting well thought out and convincing narratives for inclusion in forecast documents and reports.

Assist with research on topics of relevance to the business to be shared with key stakeholders.
About you
As well as a flair for economics, you will need to have good communication skills and the ability to convey complex ideas to non-specialists. Our team works closely with other areas of the business, so an ability to win trust and build relationships across Nationwide would be an advantage. We are also looking for someone with an awareness of and interest in financial services as well as the wider economy.

As a minimum requirement you'll
  • Be on course to (or have achieved) a 2.1 Economics Degree or equivalent
  • Have a good understanding of econometrics that includes some knowledge of statistical software such as Eviews, SPSS, Stata, R, or others.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • A track record of delivering to high standards.

We're also interested in who you are as a person. Why? Because our membership is made up of so many different kinds of people, so we want our employees to be just as diverse. We'd love to hear about:
  • Your values, and what makes you who you are
  • How you'd make a difference to our members in this role

We know applying for jobs can sometimes feel like you're sending an application into a black hole. We review each application individually. So, it's a good idea to call out your most relevant experience on your application to give yourself the best chance.
The extras you'll get
There are all sorts of employee benefits available at Nationwide, including:
  • A personal pension - if you put in 7% of your salary, we'll top up by a further 16%
  • Up to 2 days of paid volunteering a year
  • Life assurance worth 8x your salary
  • A great selection of additional benefits through our salary sacrifice scheme
  • Access to an annual performance related bonus
