Responsibilities:
  • Own the operation of SHL's global database infrastructure, primarily focused on Microsoft SQL Server clusters.
  • Also consult and support the operation of non-Microsoft databases such as MySQL and MongoDB.
  • Own the database monitoring solution and ensure that alerts and metrics are being properly collected and acted on.
  • Proactively improve the stability, security, reliability, and performance of databases.
  • Automate repetitive tasks.
  • Migrate work away from GUIs and towards scripted automations.
  • Work with development and DevOps teams to understand and improve database performance and reliability.
  • Ensure that database infrastructure is properly tuned, optimized, and configured for actual usage.
  • Review logs and metrics to identify problematic queries and suggest changes to improve performance and efficiency.
  • Support product releases by ensuring that schema changes are applied reliably and consistently.
  • Respond to production incidents as part of an on-call rota to diagnose and resolve problems in the databases.

Must-haves:
  • Expert-level knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server configuration, operation, performance tuning, failover, backup procedures, file system usage, and server configuration.
  • Basic scripting ability with Powershell and experience using it to automate SQL Server operational tasks.
  • Proven experience designing, configuring, and administering SQL Server Always-On Availability Groups and Windows Clustering.
  • Strong experience with various methods of Active/Standby configurations including technique such as log shipping.
  • Experience with automating SQL Server operations using scripts like Powershell.
  • Experience administering Windows Server instances in production.
  • An understanding of core AWS concepts and technologies such as EC2, S3, VPC/Networking, and the Shared Responsibility model.

Nice-to-haves:
  • Strong experience with Powershell and fully automating database administration.
  • An understanding of various types of databases (non-relational, time series, graph, etc...) and when to use them.
  • Experience managing SQL Servers completely remotely and centrally, GUI-less.
  • Experience with Idera and other database monitoring solutions.
  • Experience running SQL Server on Linux
  • Understanding of self-healing techniques using automation.
