An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Legal Manager to lead the contracts team in the Met Office to support the organisation to make informed decisions on business strategies or arrangements whilst complying with the legal framework in which the Met Office operates. The Contracts team is part of the Met Office’s Legal team and their activities include providing advice on revenue or knowledge generating arrangements, reviewing and drafting agreements; training business areas and monitoring legal compliance.

Job Purpose: Providing expert legal analysis and advice on contractual matters to enable informed decision making, whilst ensuring compliance within the legal framework in which the Met Office operates. Also to manage the Contracts team.


Job Responsibilities:

1. Manage the delivery of legal services relating to contractual matters to ensure that statutory obligations are met, Met Office reputation and business is protected, and the Legal team’s priorities are met. 
2. Provide expert legal analysis and advice on contractual matters in accordance with professional legal standards and the Legal Services Charter. 
3. Manage and develop staff in Contracts team to ensure personal development plans are achieved and that staff have the optimum skills and experience to meet business needs. 
4. Develop guidance and training materials for the business and technical practice notes for the legal team’s reference. 
5. Build relationships with business areas to encourage early engagement with the Legal Services team on proposed business opportunities.
Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities:

1. Has relevant legal knowledge and experience on contract law and the legislative and regulatory environment in which the public sector operates. 
2. Skilled at drafting arrangements supporting strategic business transactions and relationships. 
3. Can demonstrate effective coaching/mentoring of team members and colleagues to ensure development and performance requirements are met. 
4. A proven track record of excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Abilities:

1. Experience of working in the public sector 
2. Experienced in preparing and delivery training 
3. Experienced in best practice in negotiation and influencing techniques. 
4. Experience of working in a customer focussed environment and delivering advice in changing and complex environment. 
5. An appropriate professional qualification which may include Solicitor, Barrister, MCILX, or MCIPS.
