Lerwick Observatory Operational Meteorological Analyst
Salary will start at £23,673with opportunities to progress within the role up to the maximum of £26,119 plus unsocial hours allowance.
The Upper Air & Remote Sensing (UARS) Team is responsible for managing the operational delivery of a number of Observations networks, including Weather Radar, Radiosondes, Volcanic Ash Lidar and ATD (lightning detection). The team is spread across 4 locations – Exeter, Camborne, Edinburgh and Lerwick.
Established in 1919, the Lerwick Observatory carries out systematic surface and upper-air observations and is one of two manual climate radiosonde sites in the UK. The new purpose built Observatory is equipped to provide round the clock observations of the weather in the immediate area as well as quality monitoring of a further 150 automated observation sites across the UK. Through these monitoring and observing tasks, the station makes a valuable contribution to the UK and Global Observing Systems, as well as supporting British Geological Survey through the collection of seismology and geomagnetic observations since 1922.
Lerwick Observatory is currently run as a 24/7 site, and as such the job holder is expected to work on the standard station shift roster.

This post enables the individual to gain a good grounding in the processes and systems that would be beneficial for anyone wishing to pursue a career within the Observations Group. In particular, this post will give the individual the skills and experience that are required to be successful in the role of Observations Network Specialist.
Lerwick Observatory is a shift working station. As such, there will be periods of lone and night time working.

Undertake the agreed Observing activities and monitor observing network performance to efficiently and effectively meet customer and Met Office requirements. Support the Lerwick Station Manager in the routine running of the Observatory, and assist the wider UARS and Observations team in the delivery of Operational services.
Monitor the performance of operational observing systems taking corrective action where required to ensure networks meet quality and availability levels required by customers, providing advice and information to users of the data on the status of the networks and the details of the observing systems.
Develop technical knowledge of observing systems in conjunction with Network Specialists within the wider UARS & Surface Observing team, to act as source of advice to system operators.
Work alongside other members of the Observations team, Operations Centre and Engineers top ensure the delivery of operational services, and the timely resolution of incidents, providing advice and information to those teams when required.
Coordinate and contribute to the updating of documentation of observing processes and practices, working with Network Specialists, the Station Manager and Network Managers to develop processes and procedures in order to ensure optimum efficiency in service delivery.
Support the Station Manager in the effective running of the Observatory – including undertaking delegated tasks and the mentoring and training of new staff.
Maintain and support the relationships of the stations stakeholders, 3rd party suppliers and 3rd party visits. Acting as the point of contact for the Observatory during periods of lone working.
Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities:
Degree level qualification or equivalent in a science, engineering or IT related subject or able to demonstrate relevant experience.
Ability to analyse a problem and identify root cause.
Evidence of working as part of a multi-skilled team to deliver multiple customer requirements to varying timescales and deadlines.
Ability to prioritise work from a range of customers and deal with critical situations in a structured manner.
Ability to communicate technical information clearly and concisely to a range of customers who have varying levels of technical understanding.
Knowledge of observing instruments/networks/systems.
Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Abilities:
A broad knowledge of observing systems, the scientific principles behind the measurements and the characteristics of the observational data.
Experience of working in an operational environment, meeting delivery deadlines and working to strict deadlines and schedules.
