Role Overview

The Financial Times is home to a number of smaller business units which focus on Content Production and Events and Conference running. This role will provide key management accounting support to the Business Analyst in all financial processes, reporting and business modelling for key business areas such as Data Publishing, Board Director Program, FT Forums and Alpha Grid.

Data Publishing accounts for a significant portion of the FT’s profit despite the challenges of the recession and the structural migration from print to online revenue. The aim for the sales team is to ensure that our print revenues remain strong whilst at the same time growing our digital and content revenues. 

FT Forums and Alpha Grid are newer areas of the FT where continuous growth is expected. The aim for the sales team is to create a new line of business that supports FT branding and will help promote the business by engaging with the existing FT products such as Advertising and FT Live Events.

This is an exciting opportunity for a finance professional to gain experience working across high-profile areas of the business that require strong financial support through these changing times in order to assist our business areas in meeting their goals and targets. 

Key Responsibilities

  •  Reconciling events revenue each week (including liaising with other business areas in FT Manila and key stakeholders). 

  • Prepare month-end journals and quarterly forecasting (revenue and costs) for Data Publishing, FT Events and Alpha Grid. 

  • Prepare quarterly commission calculations (including liaising with other business areas and FT payroll for payment).

  • Build and own relationships with key stakeholders and provide ad hoc financial insight and support as required. 

  • Prepare reports and provide commentary for month-end and quarterly forecast variance analysis

  • Loading monthly KPIs into Essbase (eg Number of members, conferences, etc) 

  • Preparation of monthly balance sheet reconciliations. 

  • Contribution of ideas to help streamline our processes and develop our reporting to the business.

  • Ad hoc data analysis and reporting as required by the Commercial Finance team.

  • Timely and accurate maintenance of all procedure documentation relating to their area of responsibilities. 


Required Skills/ Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Accountancy, Financial Management or equivalent with at least 3 years of experience in the industry.

  • Ability to work independently and to use initiative and comfortable in carrying out a role that has both structured and unstructured elements. 

  • This role will have a high degree of telephone and email interaction with the UK.  Interaction with the other management accountants for other business areas in FT Manila and FT UK will also be required and in some cases third parties. Consequently strong spoken and written English skills are essential, together with the ability and desire to integrate into a remote team.  Clear communication with head office is critical for success in this role.

  • Demonstrable ability with MS Excel. Advance skills required.

  • Intermediate experience of Oracle Accounts and Essbase.

  • Strong analytical skills are required, especially as some of the spreadsheets are highly complex and this person must be able to spot errors and correct as necessary.

  • Strong organisation and planning skills, combined with good attention to detail.

  • Ability to work accurately and prioritise to meet limited timescales.
