Job Purpose

The Managing Consultant role supports the broader professional services organization by (1) designing and leading the delivery of impactful client solutions and (2) developing the performance of all consulting staff. Managing Consultants are expected to design and deliver solutions and services that are driven by industry best practices and that positively impact client business objectives and partnerships.

Consultants in this role provide I/O technical guidance to internal and external stakeholders, maximizing the learning and growth of professional services staff in doing so. Development of others is accomplished primarily via coaching during project delivery and serving as a point of escalation.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Primary job duties and responsibilities include but may not be limited to:
  • I/O Content Knowledge (e.g., adverse impact, validation, leader coaching): Is an expert in multiple content areas, with foundational knowledge in other content areas.
  • Project Delivery: Primarily coaches on projects, but may lead large, complex projects or programs, supported by more junior staff that they are actively coaching.
  • Client Relationship Management: Supports client relationships by partnering with Account Managers to help clients define needs and address changes in scope; may serve primarily in a client management capacity while overseeing the delivery work of more junior consultants.
  • Consulting Agility: Guides clients through project delivery and advisory discussions using best practices, helping clients evaluate the short- and long-term implications of different decisions; engages with client stakeholders at all levels, including executive-level audiences.
  • Scoping PS Work: Leads pre-sales efforts by partnering with PS leaders and/or commercial team on PS scoping requests for existing and new business; defines solution vision, presents proposal to clients, refines scope, and writes SOWs; joins commercial team members for onsite presentation of RFP responses.
  • Developing Others: Contributes to the career development of individuals (consultants and PMO team) through training, coaching, mentoring, and feedback, as well as facilitating exposure to the broader organization.
  • Knowledge of SHL Offerings/Products: Demonstrates awareness across the breadth of SHL offerings, demonstrating deeper expertise in at least one or two areas.
  • Serving on Working Groups: Represents broader perspectives (e.g., AMS, I/O) on cross-functional working groups that are often global in nature; may also include industry and/or professional working groups, panels, and continuing education.
  • Driving Continuous Improvement: Provides thought leadership and works with delivery and commercial teams to drive improvements in the scoping and execution of projects/deliverables.
  • Operational and Business Acumen: Monitors personal and PS-wide metrics such as utilization, AMS PS revenue, and AMS gross margin, taking or recommending action in support of personal and PS goals; educates direct reports on operational status of the business.

Qualifications

Qualifications for the role include:
  • A graduate degree in Industrial/Organizational psychology or a related discipline or equivalent work experience
  • 8+ years of relevant work experience
  • Experience in business development for talent assessment/talent management consulting projects, including defining a solution vision, proposing to clients, and writing SOWs
  • Experience delivering and managing large and/or complex client projects in one or more of the following areas: talent review; high potential identification and development; leadership selection and development, high volume recruitment, interview content development, competency modeling.
  • A track record of establishing and maintaining formal or informal coaching relationships with other consultants
  • Experience in presenting and interacting with internal and external senior stakeholders

Preferences:
  • 10+ years of relevant work experience
  • While consultants with experience in all areas of assessment will be considered, SHL has a strong preference for expertise in management/leadership selection and development when filling the current role.
