Marine Systems Engineering Industrial Placement 2021
Our Industrial Placement scheme offers ambitious, capable undergraduates the opportunity to gain valuable experience working alongside experts in their field.
As an Industrial Placement within the Observations Marine Systems Engineering team at the Met Office, you will be paid £17,900 pa and have the opportunity to spend 12 months (between July 2021 - July 2022) working with a marine team to build weather stations and their platforms,developing your skills and putting what you have learnt into practice. You will contribute to the development of marine platforms and systems, and support the deployed marine networks working at both on and off-shore locations.

Meteorological observations underpin Met Office operations, being essential to forecasting and climate services. They are used to initialise numerical models, verify our forecasts, provide consultancy services and monitor climate change.
The Marine Systems Engineering team is responsible for deploying, operating and maintaining off-shore observational sites on a fleet of voluntary ships, buoys in the Atlantic Ocean, light vessels in the English Channel and other platforms of opportunity. As marine observations come from data sparse regions, they are very valuable to the global meteorological community.
This placement will focus on developing improvements to the marine systems and platforms through the design or electrical devices and firmware improvements, helping to maintain marine platforms both on and off-shore, and working with data quality teams to improve the quality of service.
To become a Marine Systems Engineering Industrial Placement at the Met Office you will need to be someone who:
- Is studying for an undergraduate degree with significant electronic, light mechanical design and programming which MUST incorporate a placement year (i.e. sandwich course).
- Has electronic, light mechanical design skills and some programming experience with a keen interest in engineering in general and the latest developments
- Demonstrates evidence of good oral and written communication skills
- Can plan and organise work using your own initiative
- Has a proven ability to work well as a member of a team
- Demonstrates an ability and willingness to work at sea and at heights of up to 10m (training will be provided)
