About the role

We've a fantastic opportunity for a Non-Executive Director to join Network Rail, High Speed. The Board of Network Rail, High-Speed is an open and collegiate group. Our executive and non-executive directors work effectively together in a dynamic and demanding environment, with non-executive directors providing external perspective and challenge.

We are looking for individuals who can use their experiences to provide external and independent views on the running of the company, bringing external expertise and views on governance and best boardroom practice. They will provide independent counsel to the Chair and Chief Executive and give original input and contribution to Board meetings and, where appropriate, constructively challenge conventional processes and procedures.

By regularly updating and refreshing their skills, knowledge and familiarity with High Speed's business, individuals will be familiar with the risks it runs and the regulations with which it must comply to help drive it forward. They will also scrutinise the performance of management in meeting agreed goals and objectives and monitor the reporting of performance.

About the role (External)

The ideal candidate will:

Be /have recently been a senior executive in an organisation of significant scale, complexity and sophistication.

Be an experienced divisional or joint venture board member. Prior PLC (or equivalent) board or non-executive experience is a prerequisite.

Have experience of delivering significant change programmes and be able to offer informed challenge on Network Rail's major initiatives.

Have experience of balancing the needs of a variety of stakeholders.

Prior experience of working directly with government or of regulation would be helpful but is not essential.

Have the intellect and breadth of vision that will enable them to fully contribute to strategic discussions.

Bring a truly independent perspective and the ability to provide original input to board meetings, challenging strategy, process and practice at a high level and in a constructive manner.

Be motivated to act in the public interest and make a meaningful contribution to the governance of an organisation of national importance.

Have strength of character and resilience with experience of operating in a high-profile organisation, which is tasked with delivering against demanding objectives.

Have strong communication skills and the ability to articulate complex issues confidently and clearly.

Be able to work effectively as part of a team, in a low ego environment. Flexibility and a sense of humour are also important.

Apply common sense, pragmatism and good business judgement to key issues.

Be a calm and considered listener, with a personable manner, strong influencing skills, good emotional intelligence, and the ability to develop effective relationships.

Be comfortable with ambiguity. Be able to deal with complex data and see what is important.

Be an enthusiastic, inquisitive and robust individual, committed to pursuing and exploring all issues relevant to the business and governance of the organisation.

Can commit the necessary time to the role.

Not have a conflict of interest with other roles in her/his portfolio.
