The A30 Chiverton to Carland Cross is a Design and Build contract for approximately 14km (8.7 miles) of new dual carriageway between Chiverton Cross & Carland Cross roundabouts on the A30. This is the final section of the A30 between Exeter and Cambourne that requires dualling, the majority of the existing single carriageway A30 will be retained for local traffic.

The scheme commenced in April 2020 with detailed design and surveys. Mobilisation and site clearance works commenced in October 2020 with main construction works to follow on and to be completed by the end of 2023.

What will I be doing?

  • Promote and improve health and wellbeing of all personnel on the project. This will include:
    • Providing health and wellbeing support to the project
    • Fostering excellent relationships and trust with the workforce
    • Conducting medicals and tests as required
    • Planning and delivering health and wellbeing initiatives
Specifics of the role
  • Understand the Company Health & Safety and Environmental (SHE) Policies and Processes and statutory requirements as they affect the company's operations and ensure that the requirements are implemented within their sphere of influence
  • Provide operational and functional management advice on the practical implementation of the company's Health related policies and processes and all application aspects of Health and Wellbeing
  • Advise and assist in the development and review of the Health section of the contract Health, Safety and Environmental Management Plan
  • Assess, with guidance, the work environment for potential occupational health problems
  • Monitor employee exposure to hazardous environments and undertaking statutory health surveillance
  • Reviewing information on health induction paperwork including HAVs questionnaires and providing appropriate advice and action
  • Conducting required medicals including safety critical medicals, wellbeing medicals etc
  • Conducting wellbeing clinics/cholesterol checks etc.
  • Conducting drugs & alcohol testing in line with the Chain of Custody Protocol
  • Undertaking a triage role with regard to injuries sustained as a result of accidents on site (if appropriate)
  • Administering treatments for minor injuries
  • Developing return to work strategies following serious injury or a period of prolonged ill health
  • Maintaining the contract's health records
  • Research of Health and wellbeing Issues and best practices as directed and feedback
  • Actively promote the company 'BE SAFE', 'BE HEALTHY' and 'SAVE IT' messages in addition to the implementation of best practice principles across the business and to include stakeholders and the supply chain.
  • Supporting company-wide health & wellbeing campaigns.
  • Assist in the design, development and delivery of contract specific health promotion and initiatives
  • Support work planning from a health and wellbeing perspective
  • Take occupational health and wellbeing support to worksites
  • Manage the monitoring, analysis of and reporting of Health related performance at contract level. Utilise data to highlight areas of further consideration, evaluation and intervention. Ensure that appropriate performance reports are provided as required.
  • Identify needs and assist in the preparation and implementation of health related training/briefings where necessary and as directed
  • Promote best practice, capture best practice and ensure it is fed-back into the business
  • Liaise with the other members of the SHE Team and the wider organisation with regards to SHE
  • Set standards and lead by example in the management of SHE
  • Maintain own level of knowledge and competency in relation to Health and Wellbeing including keeping up to date with legal and professional changes associated with occupational health practice
About you
  • Registered as nurse on the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) register (Pin Number)
  • Three years' experience of working as an OH nurse. Ideally in the same or similar industry
  • Rec comp Card
  • Driving license
