Commercial Affairs is responsible for the financial, legal and business aspects of programme making and digital commissioning and is tasked with negotiating all contractual, financial and other commercial deal terms between Channel 4 and programme and content suppliers, in particular independent companies who make programmes on Channel 4's behalf.
Each commissioning area has a dedicated Senior Legal and Business Affairs Manager/Lawyer (and Production Finance Manager) who work with commissioning editors to agree the editorial, financial and contractual details of each project, and to manage the business issues of each genre.


Reporting to Senior Legal and Business Affairs Managers/Legal and Business Affairs Manager and working alongside the Production Finance team, this post is primarily responsible for delivering a comprehensive Legal and Business Affairs service to a number of programme departments.

  • Working under the supervision of a Senior Legal and Business Affairs Manager and Legal and Business Affairs Manager, drafting contracts and amendments (ensuring these accurately reflect deal terms) together with negotiating and concluding agreements
  • Assisting with all legal and contractual matters (including chain of title and clearance issues) in the relevant genre areas as well as department and channel wide projects
  • Assisting with strategic development issues and assessment of financial and legal risks
  • Dealing with all online and cross platform aspects of projects (together with accompanying rights and clearance issues) and liaising with the relevant internal departments
  • Preparing, administering and monitoring local PFC and BAB paperwork (including actioning minutes) and status lists
  • Checking documentation received, including PACS to trigger and authorise payments
  • Managing and assisting with the preparation and administration of a large volume of a wide range of contract types from inception to completion
  • Attending commissioning and legal routines and other meetings (external and internal)
  • Assisting with the routine review of system reporting within commercial affairs (e.g. outstanding contracts report, speed of turnaround of draft contracts etc)
  • Liaising with independent producers and other external parties, as the first point of contact sourcing and handling the answering of queries on projects and Channel 4's policies and procedures and other matters arising from contracting (including information required to trigger payment deadlines)
  • Ensuring accurate reporting and input of contract and rights information summaries on all relevant systems including RMS and ultimate rights' , liaising with other sections as appropriate
  • Handling correspondence with suppliers as required together with Diary co-ordination and organising meetings
  • Liaising with other departments in Channel 4 e.g.: Commissioning, Rights, Legal and Compliance, and Programme Planning.
  • Filing, archiving and general administrative duties
  • Supporting the Senior Legal and Business Affairs Managers and Legal and Business Affairs Managers in providing a full legal and Legal and Business Affairs service to the relevant programme genres
  • Providing 'cover' for other Paralegals within the department as reasonably required
  • Paralegals must be either part-qualified, or have or be in legal training, or have a substantial quantity of relevant legal and contractual experience.
  • Ability to draft and review a wide variety of commercial contracts together with any negotiated changes to such contracts
  • Ability to negotiate legal and commercial issues arising from contracts
  • Problem solving skills together with the confidence to take the initiative on projects
  • Interest in new ways of conducting commercial affairs business and devising new agreements and precedents in consultation with a Senior Legal and Business Affairs Manager/Legal and Business Affairs Manager
  • Sensitivity to talent issues and ability to maintain good relationships with suppliers
  • Ambition to increase Legal and Business Affairs knowledge and skills and willingness to undertake relevant training
  • Interest in all commercial aspects of the media (particularly production and broadcast) industry
  • Good knowledge of rights and clearance issues
  • Good computer and system skills, including Word and Outlook & Excel.
  • Good team spirit with general willingness to get involved
  • Excellent organisational, communication and telephone skills together with initiative to handle internal and external 'client' relations
  • Ability to check and proof read work quickly and accurately
  • Ability to prioritise and manage a large and diverse workload
  • Ability to work efficiently and autonomously
  • In - house Legal and Business Affairs experience at a media organisation
  • Media/IP commercial legal background gained in-house or at a law firm
  • Knowledge of the current regulatory environment and terms of trade issues
  • Commercially aware with the ability to assess legal and financial risk
  • Knowledge of and interest in new media developments in the production and broadcast sector and allied commercial affairs' issues
  • Facility to develop decision and deal making skills in a complex commercial and legal context
  • Ambitious with the ability to develop management skills
