What will I be doing?

We are looking for a Principal Java Software Engineer with over seven years' commercial experience to work on various software projects (new as well as existing ones in maintenance) within the business.

A Principal Engineer is one of the more senior technical roles and is for candidates with a good breadth and depth of knowledge in their chosen area of expertise.

The Role:

As a Principal Engineer, you will:
  • Work closely with the Delivery and Test teams to ensure projects are delivered in a timely manner, the deliverables meet the customer's requirements and conform to the QA standards.
  • Work closely with the Service Operations team to support growth of service contracts; work on service requests to ensure they are handled within the SLAs defined in the service contract.
  • Work closely with the Business Growth community to understand client needs, analyse complex requirements and support the creation of a commercially viable technical solution using appropriate technologies. Contribute to the proposed solution architecture, high level programme for implementing, estimated cost and risk/mitigation of the solution.
  • Take ownership and responsibility of the technical task/solution through the delivery life cycle
  • Advocate continuous improvement through effective retrospectives, recommendations and driving change. Champion a continuous improvement group (process and/or technology)
Required technical skills:
  • Java 8+
  • Database development (SQL and/or NoSQL such as MongoDB)
  • Development framework (e.g. Spring, Angular)
  • Testing frameworks (e.g. Junit, Cucumber, Selenium)
  • Developing to GDS standard
  • Source version control
  • CI/CD
  • Unix/Linux
  • Sound knowledge of cyber security
In addition to the technical skills, the candidate must also have the following:
  • Technical leadership of development team through an entire project lifecycle.
  • Experience of Agile methodologies
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Good analytical skills for trouble shooting and problem solving
  • Effective teamworking skills within cross functional project team
  • Self-motivated with an inquisitive mind and a desire to keep abreast with technology development
  • Commercial awareness
  • Adaptability and flexibility to cater to changing business needs
