The FT is as much a product and technology company as it is a journalism company. In FT Product and Technology much of our recent success has come from innovation in our digital products and services and we know that our future success will depend on it. We span three organisations: Product, Technology and Delivery. Since 2016 we have been led by Chief Product and Information Officer Cait O’Riordan. Don’t expect a stuffy finance environment. We come from all walks of life and all kinds of different backgrounds and we bring ourselves to work.

The product org is composed of ~60 people, mostly product managers, customer researchers, product designers and business analysts. We work primarily in London and Sofia, Bulgaria. Our purpose is to create continued innovation in the FT’s digital products and services. We do a lot to deliver great products, but we believe our most important responsibility is working out what is worth building in the first place. We drive the process of product discovery, working with customers and prototypes to identify solutions that answer the needs of our subscribers and our business. We define outcomes with our colleagues, find opportunities with customers, design solutions with customers, and prioritise delivery to maximise our impact.

The Role / Position Overview

An exciting opportunity is available for a Product Manager to help achieve our vision within FT Group which includes FT Specialist titles (Investors Chronicle, The Banker, Pensions Expert, FT Adviser, fDI Intelligence and Professional Wealth management).


FT Specialist provides significant revenue and contribution to the FT. There are more than 16 titles in the portfolio, of which some are within direct accountability of our product and tech teams. Last year we created a cross functional product and technology team in Sofia to support the needs of the business. The team’s focus is across 3 distinct areas:

Existing products - protecting existing revenue and profit and enabling outcome driven development eg: engagement, acquisition and retention;

Incremental growth from existing products - via product extensions, driving additional revenue; and 

Diversification - growing and diversifying through new growth initiatives into new markets, sectors and industries.

Key Responsibilities

We expect that you are a product manager with a deep understanding of customer-centered design and data driven decision making. You should have an interest in being the voice of the customer, outcome led product delivery in a fast paced environment and be able to communicate with engineers, designers, and other product managers, and effectively translate the requirements between them to ensure everyone is on the same page. You can quickly and confidently make decisions when it’s called for and use your exceptional communication skills (both written and oral) to develop healthy relationships with people from diverse backgrounds and fields.You will also be expected to work with differing stakeholders across the portfolio spanning; editorial, commercial and sales, marketing and comms and be able to work across B2C and B2B customer groups, developing compelling ways to deliver business and customer goals across the portfolios.

  • Embed the FT’s product development approach into the team

  • Contribute to OKRs - Objectives and key results

  • Be the voice of the customer, developing an in depth understanding of the way they interact with our products/services

  • Work in collaboration with the other product managers/senior product manager to define a product vision and strategy that reflects the company’s strategic goals.

  • Lead the prioritisation of the product backlog in your remit, in line with the strategy

  • Define scope, a product roadmap and a vision for your product(s)

  • Take decisions based on data both qualitative and quantitative data and analysis

  • Build and communicate your product roadmaps to stakeholders & collaboration around outcomes, kpis, metrics

  • Define, track and analyse success metrics while feeding back outcomes into the product process 

  • Track and analyse competitors while feeding industry ‘best practice’ into the product development process. 

  • Collaborate with UX, Design, Research and engineering teams to translate the understanding of user behaviour into experiments to learn, build, measure and learn & follow the FT’s Discovery framework

Required Skills / Experience

  • Product management experience with multi disciplinary teams

  • Knowledge of the entire product lifecycle from insights/analysis, roadmap development, UX, UI and Data driven approaches

  • Proven record of delivering products through collaboration with stakeholders and technical teams

  • Experience with producing strong business justifications for prioritisation

  • Have a proven track record of improving key business metrics 

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, a natural evangelist, in English

  • Developed and proven influencing and negotiation skills

  • Confident leading meetings and workshops

  • Experience working in an Agile environment including as a product owner

  • Ability to work independently and be proactive 

  • Be results driven, with a proven record of success

  • An ability to understand commercial imperatives behind product needs

  • Previous experience of working within high-growth digital businesses, having brought innovative products to market

  • Thorough, inquisitive, innovative, ‘out of the box’ thinking and ability to work without limited management

  • Have a passion for digital business, mobile and emerging technologies

  • The business stakeholders are based in the UK as is the leadership team for this portfolio, travel to London will be required.

Desirable

  • Has strong technical knowledge or background 

  • Desirable to have knowledge of the media industry and of how large media companies operate

  • Worked on B2C and B2B products

  • A good technical understanding is desirable
