The CBSNews.com general assignment reporter is responsible for pitching and writing stories for CBSNews.com across a wide range of coverage areas, including U.S. news, crime, politics, health and entertainment, and for covering breaking news as needed. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment and is adept at balancing a number of stories under deadlines!

The hours for this role are Sunday-Thursday, 1-9p ET.. You will need to work some holidays and shift your schedule as news breaks.

Your day to day:
  • Pitch and write stories on deadline across multiple coverage areas, including U.S., world, crime, politics and entertainment
  • Identify trending topics and high-interest angles to cover
  • Adjust to cover breaking news as needed
  • Assist with CBSNews.com live blogs
  • Write up broadcast scripts and news-making network interviews for CBSNews.com
  • Work with the video team to get clips posted online to embed within stories
  • Scan competitors, social media, Google Trends, Dataminr and beyond for story ideas
  • Send push alerts and breaking emails as needed
  • Use data to inform decisions
What you bring to the team:
  • 2+ years of experience in a digital breaking news environment and proven ability to react quickly as news develops
  • Prior experience working for a news website and in content management systems
  • Deep familiarity with analytics platforms like Google Analytics, Omniture, Chartbeat and Parse.ly
  • You are a skilled writer who can produce quality copy on a deadline, a and a collaborative colleague who loves to work across many teams
