We have a fantastic opportunity to join Emerald Publishing in the role of Business Manager. This sales role is responsible for both the retention and upselling of products to existing customers and the development of new accounts in the US West Coast territory. Although the role is revenue-focused, we seek a dynamic individual who is able to look more widely and develop non-commercial opportunities such as faculty and researcher relations and new services in market.

The Role & Team: 

Working out California, you’ll join our regional team consisting of Emerald publishers, marketing, sales, and customer support roles. As well as ensuring that annual revenue targets are met, this position works cross-departmentally to support the company’s brand position, strategic initiatives, and publications and product strategy. 

What You’ll Be Doing: 

You will be a dynamic and experienced sales professional with exceptional customer management and teamwork ability, ability to anticipate and meet changing customer and market needs, and amplification of Emerald’s mission of excellence in research and scholarship as it applies to both academe and to practice in the real world. The key goal is to drive sales leads, nurture and retain existing customers, and support visibility across stakeholders in order to develop Emerald’s market position. 

Who We’re looking For: 


  • Experience selling scholarly content to US west coast customers 

  • Prior management of key west coast consortia and academic library customers 

  • Understanding of key sales times and renewal periods/purchasing behavior 

  • Who to contact at prospective and existing customers 

  • Market trends 

  • Understanding of higher education and corporate customer verticals 

  • Ability to understand and apply strategy to role 

  • Ability to work with colleagues at all levels and third parties 

  • Impactful and open communications 

  • Take ownership positively 

  • Enthusiastic and passionate
