Secretariat BAME Internship x 3

Posted: 17 Mar 2020 Closes: 18 May 2020
London
Variable INTERN2020

The Secretariat BAME Internship is aimed at those from BAME communities who are interested in pursuing a career in working with elected politicians but who either lack the experience to achieve a permanent role or who are looking to cement their experience.

This is a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in politics in London.

The London Assembly scrutinises the Mayor's activities by questioning the Mayor about his decisions and investigating issues of importance to London. The Secretariat works for the Assembly to support its activities. You can watch more about the work of Assembly Members here.

You’ll gain in-depth experience of working in a fast-paced political environment, splitting the duration of your internship internships between some of the following teams, depending on preferences, skills, experience and current circumstances:

  • Committee Services Team, which provides a comprehensive meetings service for the London Assembly and a range of other bodies;
  • The Scrutiny Team, which supports the investigative work of the Assembly and its committees; and
  • Group offices, which provide support for Members individually by providing personal assistants and research officers.

The internship will provide a supportive environment to learn and hone your skills, from learning how to write accurate and effective briefings, respond to Assembly Members’ casework and draft records of formal committee meetings, to coordinating Assembly Members’ work for Assembly meetings, such as the submission of questions for Mayor’s Question Time.

No two days are the same and you can often read about work you’ve led on in the media on your way home.

To thrive, you’ll need excellent communication skills, the ability to manage and prioritise your time effectively and a collaborative approach.

We’re looking for candidates with real enthusiasm who can demonstrate an interest in current affairs and who are committed to developing a career in a high-profile political environment.

You must have academic experience up to graduate level or equivalent (including HND and BTEC). Some work experience in relevant roles, sufficient to be able to undertake the programme tasks in this work environment, is desirable but not essential

There are up to three internships and they will commence in September 2020, for a duration of 9 months.

The Secretariat’s BAME internship scheme is a diversity initiative targeted at students and recent graduates of African, African-Caribbean, Asian or Chinese origin.  These groups are under-represented in GLA’s Secretariat Unit which is why this scheme was created (in accordance with s.158 of the Equality Act 2010).

We are committed to being an inclusive employer and we are happy to consider flexible working arrangements. This may include remote working, compressed hours and flexibility on start and end times. The job will be based at City Hall  (near London Bridge station and Tower Bridge)

In addition to a good salary package, we offer an attractive range of benefits including 30 days’ annual leave per annum (pro rata) and a career average pension scheme.
