Duties & Responsibilities
Reporting directly into the Head of Legal for Regulatory Law, the Senior Commercial Lawyer for Financial Services will have primary responsibility for legal support for John Lewis Financial Services. They will manage a broad portfolio of commercial, regulatory and compliance issues.This is an exciting opportunity for a senior lawyer to join a busy in-house legal team working on issues at the heart of the Partnership. As the Partnership continues to innovate and further develop across the financial services and insurance sectors, this role will work in an advisory capacity as a business partner to senior stakeholders involved in this part of the business. Alongside the financial services specialism, it will also be important in this role to be comfortable with general procurement, payments, technology and data protection advisory work. You will be expected to lead on high value, complex or strategic projects, contractual negotiations and transactions. You will be advising on key legal and regulatory issues affecting the financial services industry, working closely with the relevant compliance manager. You will provide strategic advice on the legal and regulatory compliance of both existing and new finance propositions such as consumer credit, insurance or investment products and advise on appropriate levels of regulatory risk in line with the Partnership's policies.You will need to be an excellent communicator, who can explain legal issues clearly, simply and advise accordingly. We are looking for someone who will think commercially and support stakeholders with a mind to both the law and the strategy of the business. You will act as a senior business partner, providing strategic legal advice that actively contributes to and supports the overall direction of the Partnership, acting as an integral part of the teams that you support, influencing decisions and outcomes with confidence. Experience of working alongside a financial services team is critical.

Job Requirements
Requirements include, but are not exclusive to: • To provide strategic, up to date and pragmatic legal advice as a Business Partner to the financial services team• To take a proactive approach to, and responsibility for, developing and maintaining senior stakeholder relationships • To draft, support and advise the Partnership on the development of strategy, policies and procedures • To lead on high value, complex or strategic projects, cases or transactions • To manage the efficient outsourcing of business as usual, strategic and complex legal matters to panel law firms, including regular reporting and fee negotiations

Required essential experience skills and qualifications
• Qualified to practice as a solicitor in the United Kingdom • A track record of expertise in the in-house financial services sector (ideally in retail or retail banking)• Ability to effectively manage commercial relationships with external suppliers (e.g. panel law firms and Counsel)• Good relationship management skills both internally and externally • The ability to think strategically and support client areas in their strategic planning process
