We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Design & Engineering Manager with in-depth knowledge of construction techniques and processes across shafts and head house structures, above and below ground with focus on shaft fit out and architectural design with an appreciation of both temporary and permanent M and E as well as rail systems activities.

You will work closely with the Design Management and delivery team for permanent shaft design, Design Management and delivery team for MEP, the temporary works team and the rail system Interface manager and report to the Area Lead Design Manager and Lead Engineering Manager for the different aspects of your role.


  • Manage all of the Design and Engineering activities related to the shaft fit out incl. blockwork, fire proofing, builder work openings, doors, hatches, welfare fit out, drainage etc. and architectural design of the shafts and headhouses incl. misc. steel works, façade/cladding, roofing systems
  • Understand and support the implementation of the Design Vision during design and construction phase
  • Represent SCS in close cooperation with the Designer in the independent Design panel reviews
  • Provide technical support to the construction delivery teams
  • Identify critical engineering interfaces in advance of the works to ensure that they can be managed to minimize exposure to unnecessary risk
  • Identify opportunities for optimization of project programme through review and challenging the construction activity, sequence and constraints
  • Promote best practice in safety management through application of risk assessment
  • Assist in the timely identification of temporary works requirements, solution development and selection
  • Ensure that any proposed changes in materials or construction are checked against the original design specifications and appropriate action taken
  • Act in a peer capacity to help develop the delivery teams programme of works
  • Understand the Client and Joint Venture Partners' Environment and Sustainability Policies, Processes and statutory requirements as they affect the company's operations and ensure that the requirements, as applicable within their discipline, are implemented on the project

We're looking for:

  • Civil or Structural Engineering Qualification, minimum of an HNC/HND, preferably BEng or higher (MEng, MSc)
  • CSCS Card
  • Thorough understanding and application of the CDM Regulations 2015
  • Thorough knowledge of construction of shafts and headhouses with focus on fit out and architectural elements
  • Appreciation of the practical application of interfacing with rail systems and others

The Skanska | Costain | STRABAG (SCS JV) is delivering the HS2 Main Civils Contracts which include both Lots S1 (Euston Tunnels & Approaches) and S2 (Northolt Tunnels). The combined value of the contracts is around £1.8billion with the works due for completion in 2025. Scope of works includes twin-bored tunnels (TBM), SCL tunnels, shaft sinking, bridge demolition and reconstruction, services diversions, earthworks and the construction of site compounds.
