About Network Rail

The Network Rail Telecom (NRT) team is responsible for operating all of NRT's telecoms assets and networks. This responsibility includes handling asset life cycles as well as the development, delivery and support of outstanding telecommunication networks and services. In simple terms, NRT transports data between A and B enabling Network Rail to run operationally both on the railway (signalling, customer information systems, CCTV cameras etc.) and as a business (desk phones, mobile devices, data connections etc.). NRT is also playing a key role in the realisation of our digital railway aspiration which requires huge amounts of data to be handled securely for it to work.
Brief Description

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for a candidate with strong experience in telecoms network & service architecture, design or provisioning to work within a small team who set the key technical strategy for the modernisation of Network Rail Telecom's large estate of fixed PDH/SDH, DWDM & IP/MPLS networks that directly support the operational railway and NR corporate.

About the role (External)

What does the day to day look like?

The type of work you do daily will vary dependent on the projects you are involved in however what underpins every project is the interactions between internal partners and the end customers. Handling those complex relationships in a collaborative, inquisitive and timely manner is the key to ensure these projects meet the criteria required as you will be taking the business requirements and turning them into standard technical solution architectures that can be utilised as part of NRT's portfolio of standard service offers.

The primary goal is to design and construct a framework which allows our stations to connect to our central business units using our Fixed Telecoms networks - but deciding how it is done will all depends on your architectural vision and experience. Having some experience of delivering your ideas, both in a formal setting and within your own team will definitely help but being detail-orientated and having a logical approach is definitely required.

So, if you have a natural way with people, can think of creative solutions to challenges and have a strong background in Optical networking and/or IP - we would love to hear from you!

This role is currently based from home however eventually can be based in any of our offices, with occasional travel to our site Milton Keynes.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for someone who has experience of working with modern optical / packet (IP)-networks. Ideally you would have a railway-telecoms background and knowledge of railway station systems, however the experience in IP and Optical connectivity is what we are looking for. As the role is for a Senior Network Architect, we do require candidates to have sufficient experience within this field and demonstrable experience of leading network design or architecture on projects from concept to completion. Having a logical and collaborative approach, being able to view the bigger picture as well the detail for each part of the process and being comfortable to deliver concepts to your peers and senior leaders are some of the 'people-skills' we are seeking.

If you had any project management skills (e.g. PRINCE2), or TOGAF, ITIL or eTOM certifications, this would be beneficial but not essential.
