About the team

Our real estate group is a leader in the UK and globally, with a very wide range of clients operating and developing property assets of all types.

The regeneration team within that group works for public bodies and developers on complex urban regeneration projects which typically combine commercial and residential with public and infrastructure uses such as transport facilities.

We are one of very few firms who hold panel appointments to work for any entity across both central government and the wider UK public sector, as well as being members of the TfL/GLA panel. The team is also the first point of contact for the wide variety of often unusual and challenging real estate work we do for this public sector client base, often working closely with other teams in the real estate group (including specifically our property litigation team) and more widely across the firm.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:


The team’s areas of expertise include:

· rail and other transport-related developments;

· major regeneration projects;

· development agreements;

· advice on project structuring and operation of procurement processes;

· acquisitions, disposals and exchanges of land and property;

· leases of residential, commercial and mixed use premises;

· overage arrangements, and security;

· funding and grant agreements;

· collaboration, consortium and joint venture arrangements;

· planning and infrastructure agreements;

· institutional investment in the residential sector;

These projects are complex and the successful candidate will need to have experience of carrying out a senior role in drafting and negotiating complex and largely bespoke agreements such as development agreements, financing arrangements including grant agreements, and joint venture arrangements. Candidates may not have existing experience of the full range of agreements and issues that we handle, and these particular clients will have very specific needs of which candidates may not have direct experience; we are looking for mental flexibility, a willingness to learn, and an ability to apply principles from other types of projects and agreements.

The projects will also involve an element of routine property based work such as title review, site assembly and leasing, and experience of this, as well as of managing the delivery of this sort of work by junior lawyers, will be important.

As much of work involves acting for, or across the table from public sector bodies, the role will also involve developing a working knowledge of issues such as public procurement and governance, and involvement in the management of processes such as competitive dialogue.

Clients include: Greater London Authority, Transport for London, London Underground, Rail For London, London Bus Services Ltd, London Legacy Development Corporation London Boroughs of Barnet, Ealing and Barking & Dagenham, Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, Ministry of Defence and a number of specialist developers.

Main purpose of the role:

The heart of the role will be to work on a variety of transport-related development projects for Transport for London and its subsidiaries. It is expected that the role will also include acting on a wider range of regeneration and development work for our regeneration client base, including work for both public and private sector clients.

In tandem with partners and other senior members of the team, the work will specifically involve:

· Drafting and negotiation of complex development agreements

· Procurement of development partners, often through collaborations/joint ventures

· Inputting directly and managing the input of others on ancillary agreements including works agreements, collaboration agreements, grant agreements

· Real estate issues in the context of development work

· Project managing delivery of legal support

· Liaison with areas of specialist support such as construction, planning and tax

· Internal management and client liaison on matter finances, including matter fee estimates and billing arrangements

It is important that the candidate actively engages in practice development activity, including networking, training and tender submissions, and is keen to establish a personal profile in the world of transport projects and regeneration in London and (to a lesser extent) further afield.
