Channel 4's Consumer Insight department exists to help the corporation understand the attitudes, behaviours and habits of our viewers. This helps guide both the creative function of the channel and also support commercial sustainability and revenue generation. The objectives of the department are to:
  • Develop a deeper relationship with our viewers than any other broadcaster
  • Understand them in terms of what they think, what they like and what they do
  • Gain a commercial advantage by using these relationships, supported by data and insight, to deliver superior content and innovation, both to viewers and advertisers
Within the Consumer Insight department, the Audience Research & Insight team is focused on leading Channel 4's audience research to provide forward thinking, actionable insight that supports Commissioning, Scheduling, Marketing and Strategy.

The position sits within the Audience Research and Insight team and reports to a Research Manager.

The role is critical in providing insight and direction to the whole of the Channel 4 Commissioning team by creative use of viewing data and other research sources to help inform creative and commissioning decisions across Channel 4's range of genres.

The role also provides supports to a number of other key parts of the business, including strategy, channel management, marketing and press.

  • Drive the use of fact-based research and insight derived from it into the decision making of the key stakeholders of the department
  • Produce a range of both regular and ad-hoc channel/ genre / programme reports to inform extensive parts of the business of performance
  • End-to-end ownership of quantitative research projects: client briefs, designing, programming, analysing and delivering
  • Support the Research Manager and Senior Research Manager in qualitative projects that bring an audience perspective to business priorities
  • Be proactive in developing relationships across the business, specifically the commissioning teams, acting as a point of expertise for the Audience Research and Insight team
  • Be the main point of contact within the ARI team for certain programme genre departments [TBC]
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues in All 4 Analytics to ensure that stakeholders are provided with the most holistic view of viewing trends and behaviours
  • Be the main contact within ARI for the Channel 4 Press and Publicity team, ensuring timely and accurate delivery of performance successes
  • Experience of working in media research - be it agency or client side
  • A clear and unabating passion for all things TV and the creative process within
  • Clear knowledge and understanding of TV / video content - Channel 4's own, as well as its competitors. A strong literacy with TV programming concepts and conventions, and a creative sensibility
  • Experience of using BARB ratings and related analytical tools is highly desirable [but not absolutely essential]
  • Some experience of other analytical tools such as Tableau is also desirable
  • Experience of using research to specifically inform creative decision-making
  • Ability to translate a range of information from big data sets into a strong narrative
  • Experience of writing quantitative surveys
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written and presentational)
  • A confident presenter to both small and large audiences and experience delivering insights to senior stakeholders
  • Proven experience of working proactively and with a forward view
  • Proven ability to manage conflicting priorities and a high volume of projects
  • Proven experience of being a strong team player who enjoys working collaboratively
  • Highly organised. A close attention to detail, thoroughness and accuracy
  • A highly experienced users of Excel and Powerpoint
