Exeter, GB Salary starting at £30,325 with opportunities to progress in the role to £33,260. There is also a discretionary market forces supplement of £1,125. Salaries and supplements currently under review.

As part of the Solutions Delivery team, aligned to the Met Office GeoApps tribe, we are looking for a Senior Developer to work in a team of highly talented individuals, as we push the boundaries of meteorological applications. As one of the team's main developers, you will boost the skills of each team member through coaching and mentoring and help determine development best practices and frameworks. In addition, you should be able to reduce the time needed to get to production by improving processes, embedding continuous integration and ensuring automated testing, as well as having demonstrable experience of the essential criteria.

Job Purpose

You will:
-Plan and lead development on sets of related stories
-Have an understanding of the whole system and take responsibility for teaching this to others
-Work with other disciplines to understand what needs to be built
-Coach and mentor more junior colleagues
-Find ways to improve system robustness, resilience and stability

Job Responsibilities

-Designs, codes/configures, tests and documents software solutions.
-Increases the quality and pace of delivery of the team by utilising a standard technology toolset to automate testing, deployment etc.
-Takes an active role in software development events, such as daily scrums, sprint planning, refinement etc.
-Works with other disciplines to understand what needs to be built.
-Manages, mentors and guides other staff.
-Involvement in relevant Communities of Practice.
-Contributes to the creation of technology and process standards, pro-actively researching and recommending the use of technology to help the work of the department.
-Continually develops own skills as part of a programme of professional development.

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

1. Expert at programming in Python.
2. Experience of leading development teams, with multi-disciplinary skillsets, across geographically dispersed environments.
3. Ability to problem solve and lead development of solutions to complex technical issues and user stories.
4. Ensuring the team adheres to our software quality standards so that work is done to the highest quality.
5. Ability to discuss practices, such as refactoring, TDD and pair programming, and their benefits.
6. Mentoring developers on improved ways of doing things.

Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

1. Having worked in both agile and waterfall models and understand core DevOps concepts.
2. Experience with AWS CodePipeline, CloudFormation and Lambda.
3. Extensive experience operating as a senior developer.
4. Degree level in Computer Science/Engineering or equivalent work experience.
