Background

Government engagement, stakeholder management and strategic alignment with government priorities are critical to the successful delivery of the Met Office’s corporate plan. The role holder will have an important part to play in developing a better understanding of the policy making process and of current and future policy priorities for the UK governments, to support the alignment of Met Office strategy and plans. They will be required to work closely with and support the Head of UK Government Business.

The role holder will have an important part to play in developing a better understanding of the policy making process and of current and future policy priorities for the UK governments, to support the alignment of Met Office strategy and plans. Job Purpose

To build Met Office awareness of current and future Government priorities, predominantly from the department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), to inform decision making and organisational alignment in support of these. At the same time, to build relevant policy makers’ awareness of Met Office capabilities and expertise, and the opportunities to draw upon these during policy making and implementation. The temporary role will focus on supporting the lead up to the 26th Conference of the Parties (COP26).

Job Responsibilities

1. Proactively build and maintain relationships with influencers and decision-makers in key areas of government, focusing on BEIS, and using these relationships to build trust, credibility, influence and effective communication channels in order to deliver the objectives of the relationship and link to key internal experts. undefined.

2. Provide strategic stakeholder relationship management, focused on key areas of government and policy. Devising, developing and implementing strategic plans for engagement and supporting policy alignment of Met Office plans, to deliver outcomes which are mutually beneficial to Met Office and stakeholders, aligned to the Met Office Corporate Plan. undefined.

3. Build expert knowledge, intelligence and insight of current and emerging government policy priorities, strategies and drivers (including resourcing or developing relevant specialist subject matter) in order to develop Met Office strategy, policy and plans for government engagement.

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

1. Proven track record of strong relationship management skills, including building trusted and longstanding relationships built on strong customer focus which maximise opportunities. undefined.

2. Strong written and oral communication skills, including experience communicating complex technical information in a way that is easily understood and making persuasive arguments. undefined.

3. Experience of working in central Government or the Devolved Administrations, with a strong understanding of the landscape, departmental structures and the process for development of government policy. undefined.

4. Strong analytical skills underpinned with sound judgement under pressure, demonstrating the ability to understand issues and implications, and to develop recommendations undefined.

5. Quick learner with willingness to develop broad knowledge of Met Office capabilities and their application across government policy and customers, to maximise opportunities for the Met Office. undefined.

6. Willingness to travel - Regular travel to London/Exeter as well as some other UK travel is a requirement of this role – COVID rules allowing.

Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

1. The ability to think strategically and develop sensible plans for engagement in a complex environment, underpinned with sound judgement under pressure.

2. Strong leadership and management skills, both in teams within and outside of direct line management, including with external stakeholders.
