Salary Information:

Starting salary of £23,673 with opportunity to progress to £26,119, plus a discretionary Market Supplement value of £1,125 from 01/09/2019 and a discretionary long-term incentive plan of £2,000 (subject to periodical review).


The Met Office supplies weather and climate services to a variety of sectors, including the Aviation, Retail, Defence, Sport & Leisure and Utilities industries. We own and operate one of the largest Supercomputers in the world. Our weather prediction models are the foundations of products and services that millions of people and organisations rely on, all over the world. Our data is stored in our MASS Archiving System. In this vital and valued role, you’ll deliver software solutions to optimise the performance and user interface layer to this important system.

In this role you will be part of the team responsible for the delivery of software services related to the MASS Archive system. You will be involved in the entire software development lifecycle, including requirements elicitation and capture, design, development, roll-out to customers, service monitoring and service support. As part of a renowned supercomputing centre, you will work at the cutting edge of technology and innovation.

Job Purpose:

To contribute to the development of software solutions, to provide technical support to internal and external users of the Met Office data archive.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Write code to agreed quality standards including high test coverage 
  • Peer review code written by fellow software engineers 
  • Engage with users 
  • Contribute to team meetings where we review and prioritise upcoming work 
  • Produce and maintain procedures and documentations for fellow developers, support teams and users 
  • Help develop ways to ensure that our applications can be monitored
  • Investigate service issues and resolve operational issues in a timely manner

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities:

  1. Programming experience
  2. Interest in software engineering
  3. Ability and willingness to learn new technologies and techniques
  4. Proven ability to work independently and to deliver as part of a team

Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Abilities:

  1. Experience in Java programming, testing and frameworks
  2. Knowledge of object orientation in software development

This role will nominally be based in Exeter but we will consider applicants wishing to work elsewhere within the UK. This post require the post holder to be based in Exeter for around 4 days week during the induction period.  Homeworking and flexible working will be considered in light of the above operational constraints.
