It is home to original and exclusive shows, box sets of iconic series, live and catch up TV from Channel 4 as well as shows from key content partnerships. All 4 is available as a direct- to customer offering, available as an app on over 20 different platforms including mobiles, tablets, PCs, TVs and games consoles, as well as being syndicated to key partner platforms such as Sky and Virgin. All 4 reaches over 5 million monthly viewers and has more than half of all 16-34s in the UK as registered users.

As part of Channel 4's Big Screen Devices team, the Technical Lead will work across the full software development life cycle to translate business requirements into effective solutions for All 4 Connected TV Platforms.

Key responsibilities will focus on taking a leading role in solution analysis, design, development, integration, maintenance and support and will include:
  • Technical requirements definition
  • Solution architecture
  • Hands-on development
  • Development of standards and best practices
  • Quality assurance
  • Coaching and
  • Technology and toolset evolution and recommendation.
Reporting to the Project Manager and working with a variety of project stakeholders, the role requires the ability to converse and work collaboratively with a mixture of technical and non-technical project participants.

Your initial assignment will be on Big Screen Devices but could extend to other areas across All 4 (mobile, Dotcom) or the wider department. You'll need an appreciation and understanding of Video on Demand services and experience in the delivery of video streaming applications.

  • Leading in the analysis, design, development, integration, maintenance and support of Channel 4's All 4 solutions on Connected TV platforms.
  • Definition of technical requirements and solution architectures for Business initiatives
  • Development of and engineering oversight of the end-to-end components of the solutions.
  • Provision of advice and guidance concerning technical solution options and the associated impacts on business processes and objectives.
  • Drive recommendations in support of the development of new code or reuse of existing code and technical innovation.
  • Peer review and quality assurance of solutions developed by colleagues within the team.
  • Definition of development guidelines and standards to be used in software development
  • Assist the Project Manager to coach and mentor colleagues within the team.
  • Maintain a keen interest in technology trends and provide recommendations concerning the future technology roadmap of the team.
  • Report progress on a daily, weekly basis to the Project Manager, and identify/escalate risks and issues, contributing to the effective and timely resolution as required.
  • Ownership of the technical risks and issues and the associated analysis to resolve them.
  • Respond to project stakeholder requests and questions in a reasonable and timely fashion.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with project stakeholders and other members of the team to support project phases for User Acceptance Testing and end-to-end integration testing to ensure business requirements are realised.
  • Production and maintenance of documentation relating to technical solution design.
  • Adhere to and maintain project development standards, conventions and practices used within the team and to the required level of rigour.
  • Work with other Information Systems staff including other teams, Operations, and
  • Architects challenging requirements and approaches to ensure solutions are fit for purpose.
  • Sharing knowledge with other team members to support them in their daily activities.
  • Maintain a positive attitude to projects and the workplace.
Demonstrable skills, expertise and experience covering the following functional and technical areas:
  • Good understanding and experience of design patterns, frameworks, tools and good coding practices in developing modern single page applications using HTML5/JavaScript.
  • Good understanding and experience of underlying technologies driving the web applications such as HTTP, HTTPS, DNS, Restful web services and modern authentication protocols such Oauth 2
  • Knowledge and experience in versioning, testing, releasing, packaging and deployment frameworks and tools such as git, maven are required.
  • Debugging issues with Charles and Wireshark
  • Linux shell scripts experiences such as curl command
  • DRM systems (PlayReady, Widevine, CENC)
  • Video on Demand and Linear Streaming
  • Understanding of AWS, Apigee, Akamai, Apache, Nginx
  • Understanding of Advertising frameworks (FreeWheel)
  • Broadcast VOD/AVOD/SVOD Industry experience
  • An understanding of BrightScript (Roku) applications
