Job Title:Technology Director
Location: London or Leeds (Leeds-based would require some travel to London for overnight stays)

Channel 4 is a public-owned and commercially funded, not-for-profit UK public service broadcaster, with a statutory remit to deliver high-quality, innovative, alternative content that challenges the status quo and reaches diverse audiences.

Channel 4 was set up with a unique model as a 'publisher-broadcaster', meaning that it commissions content from production companies throughout the UK, acting as an engine of growth for the UK creative industries. It is a self-sufficient business that reinvests all profits back into programmes, at zero cost to the taxpayer. The organisation's twin goals as a content provider and business are to fulfil our remit and to be commercially self-sufficient, but we can only do so by continuing to make high quality programmes and ensure that they reach large and diverse audiences wherever they choose to watch their preferred content.

In November 2020 Channel 4 launched a refreshed strategy to accelerate its pivot to digital - with a focus on driving online viewing of Channel 4 content and building new digital revenues. This new "Future4" strategy underpins Channel 4's commercial self-sufficiency and reach. The strategy is rooted in a new articulation of Channel 4's purpose, "to create change through entertainment", from which flows a vision "to represent unheard voices, challenge with purpose, and reinvent entertainment". This sits alongside our values of creativity, empowerment, adaptability & inclusion.

This will be delivered right across the UK - from the organisation's bases in Leeds, Bristol, Glasgow, Manchester, and London - as part of the "4 All the UK" commitment. It will require a careful balance of traditional linear broadcasting with digital and on-demand services, which are in strong growth.

The Technology Director will be responsible for aligning the technology strategy with the Future4 strategy. S/he will lead the development and implementation of a shared, pragmatic, and sustainable strategy for the Technology function. The aim is to lead and drive the leveraging of solutions across C4, substantially contributing to productivity growth, process improvement and digitisation, whilst also contributing to the development of the future growth agenda.

The Technology Director will achieve this by delivering and improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the C4 infrastructure, business systems and operational processes that serve the channel; whilst delivering high standards of customer service and satisfaction.

The focus of the next few years will be to deliver the new Future4 strategy which pledges to "prioritise digital growth over linear ratings", to "put viewers at the heart of our decision-making", to "diversify new revenue streams" and to build "strategic partnerships". As such, the Technology Director will need a track record of leading digital transformation and change and the ability to work collaboratively with internal and external partners.

The role will also maximise the opportunity to engage with other industry peers for best practice sharing where appropriate.

  • Develop and lead the implementation of a long-term technology strategy and investment programme that supports the business strategy in a way that simplifies & improves efficiency and effectiveness in technology operations infrastructure and key business processes.
  • Keep growing the credibility, business understanding and deliverables of the Technology team through a strong ability to coach, mentor and develop the right capabilities and behaviours.
  • Work in partnership with the Chief Product Officer to support the digital strategy for C4 and provide the most efficient and effective technology services to support the product development needs.
  • Support the development of a procurement/partnership strategy & plan and oversee the vendor governance process across the technology function.
  • Through thought-leadership in business process improvement, Lean Management techniques and technical expertise educate the organisation on how to both remove "waste" and delight the customer - thereby growing operating income.
  • Lead the identification, prioritisation, and implementation of appropriate solutions to drive productivity improvements.
  • Work closely with Executive team to identify the appropriate opportunity for digitisation, process improvement and productivity (where applicable)
  • Promote operational best practices and introduce innovations to build competitive advantage.
  • Ensure the functional organisational structure is sufficiently flexible to cope with growth and business changes including the appropriate balance between managed and outsourced activities.
  • Create a core set of key performance indicators - driven by customer delivery, effectiveness, and cost efficiency measures - that direct, measure, and achieve progress. Promote a culture of measurability and accountability through the implementation of service levels and dashboards.
  • Lead, motivate and develop their team to maximise a cohesive working environment within the Technology function. Meet the business requirements for productivity and efficiency.
  • Ensure that customer service standards are always established and adhered to.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate
  • Comprehensive experience of operating and delivering in a similar role at Director level or above
  • A strongly commercial mindset with a focus on achieving targets and standards

  • Extensive technology experience (ideally with a multi-channel, media organisation)
