Supply Chain Operations

This opportunity sits in Supply Chain Operations (SCO), a division of Route Services that procures safe, sustainable, products and services that are in turn used to improve and enhance the rail infrastructure across Britain. SCO aims to deliver excellent value and service to our customers, helping the rail industry to work together to deliver a more cost-effective railway.

Our extensive supply chain network plays a crucial role in helping to run a safe and efficient railway.

Every year we:

• Buy and deliver 2,000km of rail and 2.5 million tonnes of ballast.

• Operate 1,200 rail vehicles.

• Behind the scenes we:

• Process £7,000,000,000 of payments.

• Handle over 23,000 IT helpdesk calls.

Every year:

• Mechanical and electrical locking fitters maintain 468 signal boxes and 387 ground frames.

• Operational property helpdesk process over 200,000 calls.

As a Workforce Advisor you will provide advice and support to the management and teams of Supply Chain Operations (SCO) on all workforce health, safety and environmental issues. Promote a positive cultural and behavioural change in all aspects of workforce health, safety and environmental management.

Please note this role is based in York or Tyne area, and will cover North-Western and Eastern routes. The role requires travel and overnight stays, as well as the occasional night shift.
About the role (External)

Key Accountabilities

1. Provide support, coaching and guidance to the management and teams of Supply Chain Operations for issues of workforce health, safety and environment.

2. Monitor and analyse workforce health, safety and environment data for trends, produce reports and make recommendations for corrective actions.

3. Identify health, safety & environmental key risks and make recommendations for control measures.

4. Support the implementation of national and local programmes and initiatives to improve workforce health, safety and environmental control.

5. Facilitate the Supply Chain Operations teams in their relationships via local safety forums/groups with Trade Union Safety Representatives and external safety and environmental bodies.

6. Provide guidance to the management and teams of Supply Chain Operations in the investigation and reporting of accidents and incidents and the Formal Investigation Process.

7. Facilitate arrangements for safety and environmental audits.

8. Coordinate and monitor safety tours and staff surveillance for the team.

9. Undertake a sample check periodically of safe system of work permits / plans to monitor compliance - take action to address issues as identified.
10. Take an active role in developing the Supply Chain Operations team in matters of workforce health, safety and the environment.

Job Skills, Experience and Qualifications


• National Examination Board in Occupational Safety & Health (NEBOSH) Certificate

• Knowledge of safety and compliance management processes

• Knowledge of relevant standards and procedures

• Knowledge of environmental management system

• Knowledge of operational railway environment

• Analytical capability

• Local Accident & Incident Investigation

• Knowledge of coaching techniques

• Good interpersonal, influencing, communication and organisation skills

• UK Driving Licence


• NEBOSH diploma

• Membership of a relevant professional body
Institute of Environmental Management Award (IEMA)
