Job Title: Summer Intern Dimensional Control

Location: Barrow (Cumbria)

BAE do offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements, however it is expected, on your Summer Intern, you will be required to attend your site 3-4 days per week. Please note, this may be subject to change in line with the needs of the business. The hybrid working arrangements including which days you are required to work on site/remotely will be outlined by your line manager.

Salary: £22,000 (Pro Rata)

What you will be doing

The BAE Systems Dimensional Control team use the latest portable coordinate measurement machines to create an as built digital twin of the product for computer analysis.
As a Dimensional Control intern you will embark on a programme to learn how to apply Dimensional Control techniques to one of the most complex products in the World - a Nuclear Submarine. This will involve utilising cutting edge technology and equipment to measure and report on units, modules, combinations and alignments of all products on our site in Barrow. You will learn how to use Spatial Analyser software to analyse and report on collected data and produce Quality Control (QC) reports, ready to pass onto Operations and raise notifications of non-conformances. You will be involved in the lining off and marking of the Datum system and ships coordinates and the receipt inspection of externally manufactured modules to check conformity.

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Experience the Submarine build process from early manufacture in the NAS Facility to major construction in the CYC and final outfit and combinations in the DDC in terms of achieving a quality product through Dimensional Control at all stages of build
• Work with both Dimensional Control and Management teams to execute measurement activities in each facility in support of operations. You will build a diverse network of trusted colleagues in Quality, Manufacturing Engineering and Operations. You will instruct Operations and Engineering on findings of surveys through reports, email or presentations as required
• Problem solve and engineer solutions when posed with Dimensional issues in build. Report and record measurements, where possible 3D model and predict future activities, also where required raise non-conformances
• Understand and interpret what Dimensional Control is including the objective of the team, what they do and why it's important. Identify the benefits to the business and programme of having a dimensional Control team

On completion of this programme, you will become a Dimensional Control Inspector. Working with a team of subject matter experts, to ensure the various products and contracts conform to set quality and engineering standards. Working towards business milestones and having a direct influence on major activities to enable build and schedule to improve cost performance and right first time.

Skills
As a minimum requirement you`ll need to be on course for achieving a 2:2 in your Bachelor's degree in any Geospatial Sciences or Surveying with mapping or Metrology, Geographic Information Science or surveying, measurement or geographic information science related degree course, or a course that includes topics related to these areas.
To be considered for this role you must be returning to University to complete your degree.
