Job Title Industrial Placement Human Factors

Location Barrow (Cumbria)

BAE do offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements, however it is expected, on our Undergraduate Programme, you will be required to attend your site 3-4 days per week. Please note, this may be subject to change in line with the needs of the business. The hybrid working arrangements including which days you are required to work on site/remotely will be outlined by your line manager.

Salary £22,000

Do you want to help our business design, build and maintain submarines and the facilities used to build them to enable submariners to live and work under the ocean for several months at a time? Do you want to help develop real solutions to enable 100+ personnel to live and work in a unique environment? Are you interested in the interplay between people, technology and design and want to make people central to the design of submarines and the facilities used to build them? Then this is the perfect role for you.

What you will be doing
As a Human Factors Undergraduate, you will engage with experienced submariners and operators to understand the challenges they face when designing and building submarines that are optimised for use by the very people who live and work in them. You will be working with a variety of specialist teams across our submarine programmes, applying unique problem solving skills in a pragmatic way, to overcome diverse and complex problems. You will also have the opportunity to get involved in many stages of the submarine lifecycle, from concept design through to activities with the in-service fleet, as well as supporting the design of site facilities and the equipment used to build and launch submarines.

We also provide the opportunity to get involved in projects outside of your primary remit. We encourage you to seek a stretch project in which you'll gain different experiences. With our huge portfolio of products and our multinational presence, there are opportunities to get involved in something different around every corner. Additionally, we encourage involvement in community projects, STEM initiatives and support groups (called employee resource groups) which all provide valuable learning and development experiences that you may not have access to in your day-to-day role. To ensure we retain our talented people, we offer a blend of sponsorship, additional support in career development planning and a portfolio of high potential development programmes. We are also fully committed to supporting graduates to work towards professional registration and Chartership with a range of professional institutes (e.g. the IET and IMechE). Our graduate scheme is accredited with a number of different professional institutes, which means that we have demonstrated high standards of delivery and support.
Our mission is to build a strong, diverse, adaptable, and high performing work force that will develop and grow our future business. We believe that everyone has talent, and at the heart of our talent management approach our ambition is to be recognised as the UK's top employer in the defence and security sector for valuing diversity and inclusion. Accelerated development will be offered to those who have the aspiration, ability, and performance to fulfil roles that are critical to our future success. Using The Future Talent Programme, we select high potential graduates and provide them with further tailored development opportunities.

Specific activities could include:
Understanding how operators carry out tasks to influence submarine design, identifying issues with design and system processes, driving changes to improve operability
Supporting the following activities:
• Analysing and assessing workload and situation awareness to optimise operator performance through design
• Planning and conducting user trials to assess developing design and optimise user interaction
• Developing and analysing Human Computer Interaction (HCI)
• Assessing Human Machine Interface (HMI)
• Using measurements about the human body (known as anthropometry) when assessing spatial layout design, including working with 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools, immersive VR, and full scale mock-ups
• Providing human reliability analysis and human factors support to safety cases

The breadth of activities above gives an indication of the wide array of activities carried out by the department. You should note that there is the opportunity to tailor both your Undergraduate experience and final role to the type of work that you find most enjoyable once you have experienced the different types of roles within the team.
