Job Introduction

The BBC's iPlayer and Sounds products, along with News and Sport, serve millions of people every month. A key strength of the BBC is live streaming. We stream all our major TV channels and radio networks, and we also provide thousands of hours of event streams every year, covering major events such as Wimbledon and Glastonbury, alongside breaking news and sport streams as they happen.

As we develop our live streaming offering, we will be creating a new gateway using cloud computing to receive and route our audio and video wherever it needs to go. That might be to a cloud encoder to stream on to iPlayer, it might be to cloud storage for re-use or clipping for social media, or it might be to send across the globe to a partner.

As more and more pre-production moves into the cloud. This gateway has the potential to become pivotal to the BBC, enabling remote production anywhere in the world.

The Senior Product Manager will take the requirements for this gateway from their inception to the roll out of the first phase for live streaming and beyond as the concept develops over time.

About Media Services

This role sits in Media Services, which is part of Digital Distribution. We provide the engine that drives all the BBC's encoding, packaging, and playback for online. We deal with over 1 billion play requests per month and encode thousands of hours of content every week covering all the BBC video and audio online output.

We are a cross functional, collaborative, and dynamic team. We value our staff, offering regular training and development opportunities as well as "innovation time" allowing dedicated time for self-improvement, learning and innovation. We take the time to reflect and improve on how we are working through team retrospectives and individual mentoring. We are a hard-working team who are supportive and promote a healthy work-life balance. We offer opportunities for flexible working and a friendly working environment.

Main responsibilities

  • You'll take the requirements and work with technical architects, lead software developers, business analysts and third-party suppliers to develop the technical solution for the gateway.
  • You'll prioritise the backlog of work and develop a roadmap and release schedule to ensure the gateway is developed smoothly and delivered on schedule.
  • You'll maintain the quality of the team's output and communicate progress through regular stakeholder updates, demos, and documentation.
  • You'll calculate the ongoing and emerging operating costs for the solution, negotiate for best prices for the BBC and work in tandem with finance teams to ensure ongoing funding.
  • You'll work with existing support teams and stakeholders to ensure that the product has ongoing 24/7 support for its lifetime.
  • You'll work with our operational teams to co-ordinate migrations from our existing technology to the new gateway product.

Are you the right candidate?

  • You'll have extensive knowledge of audio and video streaming workflows with a wide understanding of the technology and operational practices involved.

About BBC

The BBC is committed to redeploying employees seeking suitable alternative employment within the BBC for different reasons and they will be given priority consideration ahead of other applicants. Diversity matters at the BBC. We have a working environment where we value and respect every individual's unique contribution, enabling all of our employees to thrive and achieve their full potential.

We want to attract the broadest range of talented people to be part of the BBC - whether that's to contribute to our programming or our wide range of non-production roles. The more diverse our workforce, the better able we are to respond to and reflect our audiences in all their diversity.

We are committed to equality of opportunity and welcome applications from individuals, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, socio-economic background, religion and/or belief.
