  • Salary: £85,500 - £90,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.
  • Contract type: 9 month Fixed Term Contract / Attachment ending 27/03/2025
  • Location: Office Base is London Broadcasting House W1A 1AA. This is a hybrid role and the successful candidate will balance office working with home working.

Job Introduction

Our Comedy Commissioning team are looking for a Head of Development to cover Parental Leave. Reporting to the Director of Comedy, you will join the Comedy Commissioning team to deliver outstanding content including Am I Being Unreasonable, Juice, Dreaming Whilst Black, Man Like Mobeen, Power of Parker, Such Brave Girls and Here We Go.

Working closely with the Director of Comedy and wider commissioning team you will ensure the origination of bold and ambitious ideas that can progress successfully from development to production/commission.

Main Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Director of Comedy and commissioning editors to ensure that the vision for the genre is communicated and understood and that the editorial specification is realised.
  • Review, read and notes on submissions and existing developments.
  • Work closely with commissioning to develop ideas that are relevant to key audiences for BBC Comedy.
  • Work with commissioning editors on relevant programmes and provide editorial support where relevant.
  • Work closely with the Director of Comedy to devise relevant development briefs and opportunities that address gaps in the slate.
  • Manage, update, and track the development slate, and advise the commissioning team on relevant trends and opportunities.
  • An effective contact for suppliers, handling rejections with tact, responding to individual queries, progressing, and allocating ideas as appropriate, providing feedback and guidance in a timely manner.
  • Develop and manage relationships with suppliers, writers and talent as appropriate.
  • Be a key representative of the BBC at internal and external events


Are you the right candidate?

  • A proven track record working within scripted comedy.
  • Keen interest in seeking out new comedy (both live and online).
  • Demonstrable passion for creating content/broadcasting to the appropriate audience, and knowledge of those subjects which inform, educate & entertain the audience.
  • Extensive experience of making content, with a clear editorial vision, specifically an understanding of developing and delivering appropriate content to the most relevant platform.
  • Excellent writing skills and experience of writing & pitching proposals tailored to specific audience needs.
  • Sound understanding of the media industry and how it is developing with new technologies and platforms.
  • Able to demonstrate strong editorial judgement in a fast moving environment
  • Demonstrable understanding of audiences on all platforms. Highly experienced in analysing market trends on all platforms, as well as performance indicators, to inform strategic success for campaigns.
  • Has the ability to consider a range of problems and uses own judgement to apply effective, time critical solutions.
