£34,830 - £40,352 plus Recruitment and Retention Allowance of £3750pa

Job Purpose

The Met Office is looking to hire talented IT engineers to lead system and application development teams in the South West. 

Through the role you will guide a team of multi-skilled engineers through software projects providing guidance, direction and mentoring. 

Projects can vary from key underpinning technology capabilities for forecasting and climate science through to regulated industry weather data platforms and digital weather services. 

You will be working in an environment where science, technology and business collaborate and innovate to produce solutions for a wide set of customers in a variety of sectors (e.g. government, defence, regulated and commercial industry) while engaging with partners and organisations such as Amazon and NASA.

This job currently requires the successful applicant to be located in Exeter for a good proportion of the week to attend key meetings and support team development. Homeworking, compressed hours, full-time and part-time hours will be considered. Please indicate in your application any flexible working preferences.

  • Guide, inspire and mentor a multi-skilled team of software engineers to create and deliver creative solutions that meet the needs of our users and delight our varied customers. 
  • Facilitate a healthy collaborative working environment where innovation and continuous improvement are central. 
  • Communicate technical solutions, project focus, risks and perspectives effectively with stakeholders, peers and external partners/organisations. 
  • Contribute to our cross-office communities of practise, contributing and sharing ideas and perspectives. 
  • Staff management.
Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities
  1. Proven ability of providing effective leadership including support for mentoring, upskilling and the well-being of the team. 
  2. Proven ability of designing, implementing and delivering a number of robust software solutions that can be lifecycled efficiently. 
  3. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to listen and clearly present solutions and proposals to customers, colleagues and internal/external stakeholders. 
  4. The drive to leverage new technologies.
Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Abilities
  1. Degree in a Technology, Science or Engineering discipline, or equivalent professional experience. 
  2. Experience of leveraging AWS Cloud capabilities. 
  3. Experience of working with Agile Methodologies. 
  4. Technical Certifications in Java, Python and/or AWS.

This post requires you to gain full security clearance due to the nature of the role. This role will nominally be based in Exeter but we will consider applicants wishing to work elsewhere within the UK.
